I love the sound of the boxer 4... probably the best sounding engine ever... definately one of the most distinctive. There are some engines out there that you can identify easily b/c of the exhaust sound.
subaru boxer 4
ford modular V8 (4.6L)
chevy 350
porsche 6-cyl
ferrari v-8
BMW inline 6
just to name a few...

if you took off our cyl head and looked down you would see [OOOO].
You would see [O O] on the right side of the block and [O O] on the left side of the block.
O representing a piston head
Nothing sounds quite like a small block chevy with a dual plane manifold and full lenght headers. Its a sound thats than the Train Wreck.

Its b/c they run un-equal length headers (yes, headers.......two 2-1 headers) from the factory. Lots of manufactuers, like Perrin for instance, make equal length headers for them though, b/c alot of Subie owners are against the classic Subaru burble.
Perrin doesn't make equal length headers because "a lot of owners are against the blah blah I don't know what I am talking about." They make equal length headers because they offer more gains than unequal length headers.
its also because of the firing order. If im not mistaken the sti's have an odd firing order, which is very uncommon in a 4-banger (i think the wrx is the same way).
Yeah, your right about the larger gains that equal length headers over the un-equal length headers. Any idiot can go pick up the newest issue of Modified and see that AMS proved that on their '06 STI. But in all reality, alot of people swap to those headers for the sound aspect of it. Weak sauce? Yes. But people do dumber things. Just like everyone who gets lightweight wheels.....not for the weight saving......but b/c they "look cool". Same goes with CF body panels like hoods and trunks. They save weight.......but c'mon, look at how many "boy racers" put CF parts on just to look cool. Theres a guy in my town who has a silver '03 bugeye, and I noticed his car was lacking the classic Subie burble, so I asked him "hey, most Subie owners skip the aftermarket headers and just do the downpipe" and his exact response was "I got tired of the way my car sounded so I got the equal length headers".
So in a perfect world, yeah, everyone would upgrade things on their cars for the real, beneficial reasons..........but that world just dosent exist bro.

ive never heard of ANYONE replacing the headers to get rid of subarus signature rumble, hell im running a gt42r with custom 4" headers that are 1" longer on header 1, just to get the rumble back that i lost when i had the gt35r and aps equal length headers
But we have our fair share of nice cars too. My roomates STI has an AP (Agency Power) full TBE, AP BOV, Injen CAI, Cobb springs, AP short shifter, GT Spec cf exhaust heatshield, Cobb turbo heatshield, custom dyno tuning......few other knicks and knacks. He's getting ready to get some AP sway bars and GT Spec bracing for the entire car, then he's gonna work on upgrading the turbo and fuel system.
if he does a turbo upgrade have him look at the garrett gt4088r, dont do the 35r gets boring
Word. My friend Eric had the 35r.....damn I used to rememeber exactly what kit he had......... on his '06 WRX. I used to work w/ him and carpool with him. I think he went with a Forced Performance turbo..........but I just cant remember. He's since moved to PA, so I havent talked to him in a while. But last I heard he ditched that turbo for a different one.
Funny, b/c my roomate has a fully hooked up '06 STI and is personal friends w/ the owners of Mach V Motorsports and the guys at Vivid Racing.......so yeah, what would I know about Subies.
