Not the greatest article, but it’s good to see more of the Cruze. The more I see it, the more I like it.

interesting but 1.4? While I see it as being a challenger for fuel economy it can't replace the current tc cobalt for performance.

It's starting to grow on me... but I'm also going to withhold judgement till the coupe comes out.

No it's not. They will be sold side by side.

Base motor. The current 2.2 makes 148hp...the Turbo DI 1.4 will make 140hp.

GM has said this car will have one powertrain option when it is released. The more information that comes out about this car, the more obvious it becomes that this is not a direct replacement for the existing Cobalt. That's not to say it won't become one in the future though.

As crazy as this sounds but I say the cobalt will be considered an upper model above the cruze...and possibly they may quit making sedan cobalts...and just make the ss cobalt and sport or something who knows.

I think what L.P. was getting at is the fact that the Cruze will only be offered with a highly efficient low power motor, they will likely keep the Cobalt performance models available, while replacing their lower end with the Cruze.

That little motor could be a torque monster with some tweaks.

The cruze will be on the higher end targeting the same buyers who would otherwise be looking at LT models of the cobalt. This is because the production output will be much lower than the cobalt at first. Keep in mind, it is designed to transport people from point a to point b achieving great fuel economy with a great interior and not bad looks and from an engineering standpoint is miles better than the cobalt. In other words, its a Corolla/Civic competitor, designed to perform the same jump in quality as the 2008 Malibu did. As production is ramped up into 2011, the cobalt will be 100% phased out in favor of the Cruze but until then the Cobalt will stay on becuase they will be producing many more cobalts that cruzes.

I know many of you are worried about the Cobalt SS, but GM needs this car. The Cobalt SS accounts for around 10% of the combined cobalt sales, meaning 90% of the people looking at the cobalt are not interested in a performance car. They want a reliable, fuel efficient car with an interior that looks like they should have paid twice more for. GM has always lacked in this department (although they have done great in the Fuel economy and reliability parts recently), and with the Cruze it may just get them back in the seat. For too long now they have taken on a "value" role, meaning always aiming to be the cheapest car in their class, most of the time by sacrificing interior quality. I have no idea what will happen to the Cobalt SS going into this, but as GM is in big trouble monetary wise, they will most definetly cut budgets on performance models like the Cobalt SS since they are a relatively small slice in the pie of sales. In other words, if the Cobalts replacement is good enough to ****** 10% more sales than the Cobalt because its a better car, they have already made up for the loss of the SS model. This is mostly speculation though, and I may change the theory later :-)

This whole situation with the Cruze/Cobalt is going to be interesting in the next few years. I agree with whoever said they'll be sold side-by-side til 2011 or so and then the Cruze will just take over. And it is a better car for GM than the Cobalt is (for how much I hate to say it). I'm still holding my final opinion til it debuts in Paris in October and especially if/when they release a coupe of it.

the reason for such a small motor is the fuel economy. you take a small motor and turbo it, itll feel like a larger motor (like a 2.2l) in acceleration however your not feeding 2.2l at cruise speeds, your now feeding a small motor. from an engineering standpoint, its a great idea and this theory has been used in europe for years.

im sure itll come out as a single drivetrain car, however i bet they will add a performance option.
