auto to manual

i got a pontiac g5 as a present from my dad. I am very happy to say it destroys the civic i previously had in torque and drivability.

but he decided to get me an automatic tranny in it. I was wondering if anybody had information to the parts need to modify the car from an automatic to a manual.

I know the transmission and clutch, and things such as an additional pedal and the shifter. but i need to know if i need new harness or things of that sort.

please let me know what it would take to do this project.

thanks

1) Drive to dealer

2) Trade in car for one with a standard transmission

3) Lose a lot of money

4) But not as much as if you were to do this conversion

5) Enjoy your new manual tranny car

....seriously.

I agree. Older cars were no problem because they were all mechanical. Now the computer has way too much to do with everything in the newer cars. Especially the new Cobalts/G5's. I assume You'll be in to replacing the ecu and half the harness too just to make it work. Not to mention how much of a pain it's going to be to find the parts used and how expensive it will be to buy the parts new. If you can find a smashed up donor car that's exactly the same except for trannies and you have enough knowledge/time to tackle this job yourself then I say go for it. Otherwise just deal with auto or as everyone else said... TRADE IT IN.

I can't believe you are getting rid of a gift from your dad because of the transmission... That's low.

Good luck with the trade. The above posters are right, the conversion would cost an absolute fortune.

There is only one car ever i would do an auto to manual swap, and that is a Subaru SVX, that is only because I love the car and it was never made in a manual.

Be happy with it and drive it for a few years. Save up and get a nice car with a manual. Save all that money you will lose on conversion or trade.

Manuals are fun, but I don't think it is imperative you have one in a g5...

Honestly the cheapest out of all of these is to have Trifecta get you a transmission tune.

Wow ..... If my father bought me a car as a present .....I wouldn't trade it and lose 25% of the value just to get a standard . Damn......why not just go into dads bank account.....take out 5000 dollars .......then burn it right in front of his face?? Cause thats basically what your going to do to him.

Future and current parents........this is why you make your kids earn something as big as a car .......otherwise they will **** on it

I got the car because the car i used to have, which i paid for but he picked out, broke down, after i had spent over 5K fixing it. Then he randomly showed up with it for me, i was happy no doubt. But I honestly would rather he paid some of my tuition and i saved up and bought a car i really wanted to get.

How has no one mentioned that this is posted in the cruze discussion section? Anyway, like others have said, just trade it in for a manual. Or do what I did, be patient, and wait until you find a local dealer with an SS or GT. That's what I did, drove my slushbox for 2 years then found a hell of a deal on an 08 SS/TC.

ive done it with my neon, it was a process

we had to bypass the Park rev limiter to make the car think its always in D which was tricky

the pedal assembly was a HUGE PITA 6 hours to swap, not sure how long in a cobalt tho

I seriously doubt anyone has ever successfully completed the change. As others mentioned before, you will face an electrical nightmare in the swap. Too many sensors, computer modules...etc involved in this car. Most people fail to see that the Cobalt/G5 is heavily dominated by electronic controls where mechanical ones once prevailed. Your steering and throttle are electronic. In an automatic car, the vehicle will flip out if it doesn't sense the presence of the 4T45-E transmission.
