C&D 2008 Lightening Lap Result

C&D 2008 Lightening Lap Result

Taking the number one spot in the LL1 class the Cobalt SS/TC stepped up to the plate and hit a home run with a 3:13.00 second lap. C&D liked what they saw with the updated SS/TC.

We’re massively impressed with the new front-wheel-drive champion of the LL1 class, the Chevrolet Cobalt SS. Not only did it lop three seconds off the Mazdaspeed 3’s 2007 front-drive record of 3:16.0, it was only a half-second behind the overall LL1 record of 3:12.5 set by the Nissan 350Z Track in 2006.

Two years ago, a supercharged Cobalt SS with 205 horsepower recorded a respectable 3:20.6. We invited the ’08 Cobalt SS because it has a new 260-hp, 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder turbo engine and a host of chassis upgrades including wider tires and larger brakes.

The changes made a huge difference at the track as the Cobalt’s new brakes resisted fading, its wider tires maintained their hold lap after lap, and its compliant and balanced chassis made it easy to exploit the phenomenal grip.

Gobs of power from the new engine and an optional limited-slip diff allowed the Cobalt to take most of the track in third gear. The SS hurtled forward with an anger missing in the rest of LL1 and much of the LL2 group. Despite the explosive power and front weight bias, the Cobalt SS resisted the typical understeer found in front-drive cars. The SS goes about its business with almost no drama. You only realize how quick it is when you arrive at start-finish and wonder, “How’d I get here so fast?”

I don't want a new SS. I don't want a new SS. I don't want a new SS.

(I tell myself this quite regularly to keep my urgent need for the new SS under control.)
Cobalt SS/TC > all

Cobalt SS/TC > all
LOL. I'm beginning to have to do the same thing. The good reviews just keep adding to the temptation!

I've justified my "craving" by saying that if someone will give me pay off for my car then I'll go buy it. $15,3xx is it... lol

While the 350Z wasn't in this year's test, C&D did test one at the LL in 2006.

It was the $35,865 "Track" model and had:
  • 300 horsepower
  • six-speed manual gearbox
  • limited-slip differential
  • forged alloy wheels with sticky high-performance tires
  • traction control
  • vehicle dynamic control system
  • Brembo brakes

It was 1/2 sec. quicker than the 08 Balt SS Turbo, but cost $12,000 more.

LOL

Here's a .pdf of the lap times. http://www.caranddriver.com/content/...08+Results.pdf

Just so you know, the Cobalt beat:

Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0
Honda Civic Mugen Si (by 11.8 seconds)
VW R32
Dodge Caliber SRT4
Subaru Impreza WRX STI (by 6.0 seconds)
Infiniti G37 Sport
Lotus Elise SC (by 3.3 seconds!)
Dodge Challenger SRT8
Honda S2000 CR
Audi S5
Lexus IS F
BMW135i
Mitsu Lancer Evo MR

Check out some of the times on that list and compare to much more expensive LL2 cars that the Balt destroyed. It's amazing.

On 9/26 I provided a compilation of C&D's 3 full years of LL Testing (but it was prematurely locked by Erod).

Road and Track mag just tested a sedan and it beat a Lancer Ralliart, Subaru WRX, and a Mazdaspeed 3! The Cobalt impressed the hell out of them.

^^x2 man, x2. I LOVE my car, don't get me wrong but the more stuff I see about the t/c the more I wish I had one. At this point it probably wouldn't be worth it to trade for one. Damn.

As an ex sc owner, there's no looking back, but I loved my SC. The TC feels quite different handling wise.... unreal. If you wanted to, you could easily pull 4 wheel slides in this car, it's that stable.
