I was actually thinking about this the other day, and they now have digital dashboards specifically for these types of builds:

They are definitely expensive, but something to consider. Seen it on Donut Media with the Miata.

Oh, by options, I mean standalone options - as far as Haltech, AEM, LugTronic, MS3, etc. LugTronic is popular for a lot of older VW's (MK2 & MK3 engines) because it's simple and typically PNP, but a lot of 1.8T guys say that it doesn't work that well for them - it's a bit slow in some areas.
One guy really seems to love Ignitron. I know he's ran a couple of them previously, including LugTronic and Haltech. Apparently, Ignitron is a standalone that's built almost exclusively for 1.8T engines.

I chose to go with a digital dash and yes, they are not cheap. While the old style gauges were all wired in, I didn't want to have an issue like you. Considering all things about this project, having the least amount gremlins to deal with.
My only regret is that I bought the smaller version, due to space size.

Made some progress. I bought a gps receiver, toggle switch, momentary switch, and a 5V 5A power supply. Now I can turn the car on, then switch on the pi. When I turn the car off, I push the momentary switch to command shutdown. I got the gps receiver working in my gauges code. I found an easy python module to connect to the OBD2 data, so I should be able to have fully-functional gauges by the weekend (knock on wood).

You said you're running this on PI hardware, right? If it's the same setup I seen via Google search, that setup is bloated, so I wouldn't be surprised you'd see faster bootup with a better SD card and/or faster PI hardware.

Bad news: I'd officially need a bolt-on speed sensor if I'm to use HP tuners and the ECM to report my speed to my dash. Which means I'd also need it to use all of the tables and such in the ECM. So until then, I'm stuck in "first gear" and no dfco, etc.
Good news: I got my GPS code to output the speed without a delay. Now I need to get my code fixed so that it doesn't give an error 9/10 times when it starts up. Prof if you have some python experience I might be able to use your help with that.

Hey Exninja,
I found your thread here after we had exchanged some messages back on mev forum years ago. I finally finished my Exocet this past year. Took me forever but it's done. I did a proautosports track weekend in November. Hope to go out again in February.
I found your thread here because I wanted to see what you did for the windscreen. I'm having top speed issues so I was looking to remove mine or run something minimalminima
I also know python so if you still need help, I can take a look.
