06 Gauge Cluster Compared to 07 Cluster

So I ordered a 2.4 (140MPH) cluster off of ebay. I have an 07, and the guages were taken out of an 06... I honestly didn't think much of it. Well, tonight I installed them. They do work and the speeds/rpms/gas is accurate. Right away I noticed that the chimes and blinker sounds are actually IN the 06 cluster (07 sounds are actually from the headunit). So they overlap... Sounds interesting, to say the least.

And then I also noticed that my DIC buttons on my steering wheel won't change the screen anymore. I'm just stuck on the outside temp/mileage display.

So I'm kinda disappointed, but I love the look of the 2.4 gauges too much to swap it back out. So I figure I'll leave it for now and figure something out later... it isn't a huge deal.

You need a 07+ cluster for your DIC to work right or get these. I have the whitegauges.net overlays.

did anyone else notice that this guy is a 2.2? so no wonder that the gauges didnt work... i mean he took the ss (2.4) overlays into a 2.2... does anyone else think this is interesting?

Actually, there was a big thread about a member who was looking into doing this same exact thing. I can't find the thread, but I do remember seeing it for sure. It also wasn't the overlays... It was the entire guage cluster.

The gauges aren't calibrated to certain PCMs or models...the PCM (in ANY trim) basically sends out a universal speed as an actual number to the cluster, so, for example, I could get the 160MPH cluster and it would work fine. And I also said that the speeds/RPMs are completely accurate, so it isn't an issue.

Now, one problem that I'm running into is that the 05/06 Cobalts had all of the warning/notification chimes coming from a speaker inside the cluser. The 07s have the chimes in the headunit being outputted from the actual speakers. So now I basically have two chimes that overlap.

The other problem is that the 05/06s and the 07s use a different type of DIC system. My steering wheel DIC buttons are not functional anymore, I'm just stuck on the outside temp/mileage display.

Like I said, it honestly isn't a huge deal, but I thought it was really interesting and would share with everyone else.

so basically if you have a 2007 you could buy a 2006 gauge cluster and not have to buy the expensive radio harness to keep the chims

I thought about that, and you are completely right... but you can't control the DIC, so you'd probably end up doing some reverse engineering and rewiring and the possibility of having to buy some more 06 parts, IF it is even possible.

So, if you are OK with losing the DIC controls, then you're right.

why not ask whoever you got it from if you can switch it out for an 07 model?
