2006 SS/SC Steering Wheel on 2005 Base
2006 SS/SC Steering Wheel on 2005 Base
I want a leather wrapped steering wheel.
I have a base model 2005 g5...same as base cobalt.
I found a wrecked 2006 ss/sc with the leather wrapped wheel...my wheel is just vinyl. I am planning to take the wheel from the ss and put my airbag in it and use it in my car.
I don't really care about the audio/cruise buttons being functional...i more so just want the leather wrapped.
The wheel is the same 4 spoke as my car, only difference is the leather wrapping and the controls.
I assume it will be a direct swap without any trouble. thoughts?

I'll still have the pontiac emblem...im using my airbag which has the pontiac emblem on it...
I can get the leather wrapped wheel for like $80. Add an airbag and it'll be like $500

Disconnecting the battery and then waiting for the backup power to run out for 20 mins or so should make it pretty safe to remove the airbag. It will literally be off the car for 5 minutes while i swap the wheels.
UPDATE: I did the swap tonight. It was very EASY to do and we had no issues at all.
Specifics for others who may be interested:
I have a 2005 base model....plain vinyl steering wheel, 4 spoke.
I NOW have a leather wrapped/audio/cruise steering wheel from a 2006 SS/NA.
The process was simple. We unhooked the battery, released by airbag from the stock wheel and set it aside. undid the bolt holding the wheel onto the column, undid the harnesses and pulled the wheel off. Didn't touch the SIR coil at all so as to not throw it out of alignment. Then proceeded to put on the new wheel, put bolt back on and reattach the wiring....and then put the stock airbag into the new wheel. Works perfect!
Also, the cruise/audio control buttons aren't working on the new wheel....but I believe with an ECU flash they can be enabled. The harness for the new wheel has 5 extra pinouts compared to my stock harness and the extra pinouts are also on the STOCK SIR coil harness...hope that makes sense..heh. The fuse for the controls is also in the fuse box by the passenger seat, so I think it may just be a reflash to enable them...going to check into it tomorrow at the dealer.
