3M body molding tape failing?
As a lot of you know, I have the RK Sport kit on my car. I re-did the front lip over the summer and was very pleased with the result, until now. The body molding tape is failing in 2 ways. First, it has cracked through in several locations. Not torn, cracked, like it was dry rotted or something, but its new as of last summer. Second, the adhesion is gone. The tape literally isn't sticking any more. I can grab a section of the lip and pop it right off, which is not at all supposed to happen with tape like that. It should stretch and tear if you try to pull on it.
On my previous two installations, I used just ordinary auto parts store brand tape and it worked fine. Any body guys out there that know what the hell is wrong with the 3M tape?

Im in Nashville, so rarely anything colder then 20 degrees.
And no, you don't want to screw on lip kits. They actually rely on the foam of body tape to allow the parts to flex and bend. Screws cause cracks. Glue will too. Tape is designed for this kind of thing, which is why I'm kindda surprised at the problem.

when we use the 3m tape at our body shop if your putting it on plastic you need to use an adhesion promoter wipe first otherwise it doesnt really stick to plastic well.

I read the 3M websites FAQ about the tape and plastic. They were very specific to talk about bare plastic versus a painted part. I have my lip painted on the surface the tape sticks to. It is possible now that I think about it that the paint shop didn't clear or polish that portion. I had them do it that way because otherwise when you look down at the part you could see the bare black plastic.
