Another headlight/HID/projector thread...

Okay, so I did a lot of searching but it's really frustrating reading old threads because they're full of missing images (damn photobucket) and dead links.

So I have a few questions. I think I want gen4 headlights because they are the easiest install and plug and play, and seem to be cheaper and more warrantied than retrofit. My question is, should I go with these: https://www.modernperformance.com/pr...or_lightsbulbs

or this ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-2009-CHEVY-COBALT-HID-PROJECTOR-HEADLIGHT-LT-LS-SS/400913896828?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D30987%26meid%3Dfb11d22c9cdf4d13b33d3f2a0aac9ef9%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D220925775792
both are Depo brand. the ebay link has HIDs pre-installed, and tbh I have no idea how hard or expensive it is to install HIDs into the first link. I would be okay without having HIDs but apparently there is cracking happening with halogen bulbs in the gen4 depos without HIDs?

if anyone can weigh in on this or offer up alternatives, I'd really appreciate it.

Ok first off. The output of those headlights suck due to the HALOGEN projector that comes standard in them. That means they perform better with a halogen bulb vs a hid bulb. Your better off keeping stock headlights jn place rather than those depo Gen 4.

Who don't warranty retros? There ain't much to warranty. I don't sell hids with retros as hids fail. Consider them another bulb system with a high failure rate. To reduce the failure rate. Increase the budget to get a good hid kit. Typically 150-200. My personal hid kit costs 500$.

Hids in stock headlight is a huge nono.

If you want more lightinG. Look it a retrofit. There is no excuse to not getting em. If you complain about price, then move along and don't waste the retrofitter time. 80% of price goes to parts cost.

Hmm well let's say I'm mostly upgrading for aesthetics (I REALLY don't like the stock assembly), because I don't really drive at night very much. I'm also coming from a car that basically afforded me no lights at night so even now with stock headlights, it's a huge upgrade.

Should I care about HIDs if I don't really care about added visibility? That's why I prefer the gen4s as opposed to paying double that for retrofits.

no. people make the huge mistake and buy the gen headlights thinking they will offer better visibility . the outcome is always the same. Retrofitted lights. even gen headlights get retrofitted. ive only met a few people who liked the gen lights but complained about the output. ive also retrofitted those lights to give em more performance.

take the time and look into this.

there is a lot of beauty to take in. the best part. you make the lights happen to your own wants.

if that fails to inspire you. i guess go get a gen headlight. just dont put hids in them. those projectors are meant for halogen bulbs.

Go with retro's, whether you make them yourself or have them made for you, you won't regret it, they looks awesome and have great light output.

Retros are so worth it, especially if you go with EvoX-R projectors. The throw on those projectors is insane. Talk about a tunnel of daylight.

Thanks for the replies! All the threads I saw about gen headlights were mostly fitment not longevity, but it sounds like the overwhelming majority supports retros. Now the question is, performance mods and a tune or retrofits first?

If you want to go faster, you have to be able to see.
