Anybody have this hood - and use it?

I kinda mentioned this on another thread, but whatever.
Does anyone currently have any experience with this hood -
http://www.rksport.com/main/part_det...did=14&catid=4
If so, are you using it as an intake for your shortram? How well does it work - does it automatically flow right into your intake or did you have to do any modding (i.e., adding in some plastic to the bottom to make a duct..)?
Also - how do you think it would look on a silver ss/na? If you've got it and have pictures of it mounted on yours, I'd like to see.

Yeah - I'm trying to decide between this style or one with vents towards the back, kinda Lancer EVOish. I'd rather have something functional.. but looking cool is also important.

fuse box has a cover, and your intake needs to be submerged... drops will evaportae when hitting a hot intake,,,, plus most vents dont go over the intake besdes this

Just some thoughts - I don't think they'd make the damned hood if that was really a concern. Seems to me nobody would buy them, besides a lot of cars use intake hoods and don't most short-rams/CAIs come with a bypass anyhow to prevent hydrolock.

I spoke with the guy (sorry - new here, can't remember names yet..) with an offset DIRECTLY over his air box and he said he's had no problems with water. Supposedly it takes a LOT. FIgured I could use this as a summer hood, then put the stocky on when it gets winter time, as I would be nervous about snow getting in there when the car isn't running.
Worst case as well, you could always just make a little piece of plastic to cover your intake, since it'd still have access to the air from the wheel.

So, does anyone have this hood

i have paid for this hood and it should hopefully be here on friday, ill post pics up when i get it installed, mine is carbon fiber though. i am also getting the garrett turbo kit and using the ram air effect on the filter with a custom pipe job since garett uses a cai setup.

I have the RKSport hood on my SS/SC, not too functional, more for looks. I love it and have no issue with water getting into my engine bay at all. I use it during the winter as well and again, no issues. I have pics in my gallery, there not updated, the only difference is the "mesh" is painted black and not red.

Thanks DTM, I think it'd look nice on mine in silver with the black mesh - though I'm kinda pissed that it's not particuarly functional.. maybe it can be made *more* functional. Are you using a CAI/Short-Ram right now? What are you getting your airflow from? Also - do those aluminum door strips come standard on an ss/sc or was that an install?

Intense - yes, I like some of their hoods (they actually have this one on there, too) especially the vented hood right above this one on their list.. but I'm not really into carbon fiber. Does it take to paint very well? Seems kinda wasteful to pay for CF just to paint over it..

this is probably the best looking hood for a cobalt, and most functional. However, its a bit steep in price.

Well, I emailed them on that issue - because I agree. They've been posting the G5 hoods which run the same $$ on eBay, initial listing at 250 or buy it now for $500. I think someone here is bidding on the G5 hood as the lone bidder, and they'll get it for the $250.. I figure as long as they do that more than once I can get it for under $400, plus the shipping, no prob.

Yea, the black mesh really does make a difference, I have to get some more up to date pictures. This hood is just not functional on the SS/SC since the intake is on the opposite side of the engine bay. The hood was designed for the 2.2 and 2.4 since it allows the air to come out of the hood right above the intake on those engines. I have the K&N CAI on mine. Those aluminum strips (door sills) I got from ShowMeStreetCustoms when they were in business, but now you can get them from MRZ Performance, check out the supporting vendor index, I think there having a group buy on them right now as well. Anything else, feel free to ask.

Very cool - love those and thanks. I had them on my Coug, came stock, and I think that's one of the little pieces that can really dress a car up.

And I guess that means it would be functional on my 2.4? I can see on the underside pics that have on RK's website that they definitely put some grooving in to move the air that way..

I agree, those little pieces make a big difference when it comes to appearance.

The hood is functional for the 2.4 since the intake is on the correct side of the engine bay. Install is a breeze as well, when they say "direct bolt-on", they mean it. Takes a total of 5 minutes to pop the stock one off and put the new one on. Now the painting....that takes some time .

Haha, well yeah. Figured if I can find one and get a good deal on it, I can get it painted now and then just put it on in the spring. I have no desire to expose another new hood to all this damned salt.

I hear ya man. Best of luck with it, post some pics when you do get it. I have yet to see one on the 2.4.

Plus the scoop on that hood is fully ducted to a hole over the stock air box cover (on a 2.2 or 2.4). So any water getting in would end up there. And that isn't a problem - I haven't had any trouble in the months I've had my ram air set-up in use.

That was probably me commenting on my ram air set-up. Yes, it causes no trouble, not even with snow (I, too, planned on sealing it off for snow, but actually haven't bothered and it has no effect - if the scoop is filled with snow the air box breathes through the stock fender inlet, as you indicate).

I'd love to have that hood. It wasn't out when I did my mod, plus mine cost me about $250 (including the striping) which was a lot cheaper, if not as nice looking.

I like your look, it's definitely different and it says "hey, i'm fucntional".. that's a good thing. You put a lot of effort into a unique look - plus since yours is a sedan, it looks more similar to the Subaru-styled hood.
Don't know if it'd work on a silver coupe, but I think it does on a blue sedan.

Its kind of funny talking about functional hoods for our cobalts. The only time a hood with a ram air scoop or something works well if the intake is connected somehow to where the air comes into the hood. In most cases a true cai will suck just as much cold air from near the ground as a cai ontop or by a air vent in a hood. You would not even noticed a differance in a dyno with a differant hood, functional or not. Now higher speeds is a differant story. You may only start to see the increase in hp after 40-60mph. Either way, it may be worth the extra 1-2hp and 1-2 torq? Hoods are deff. more for appearance than anything. However it is a great benefit to get a lighter hood for weight reduction. Then again, less weight on the front of the car = even less traction. With the right suspension though you can counter that.

Yeah, the RKSport hood seems like a good hood, though its very expensive. I look on saving up for one. Not to thread Jack but what happened to ShowmeStreetCustoms, I was getting ready to buy a fuel rail cover and a valve cover insert from them when they disappeared.

You may thread-jack, I've decided I'm going to get one.. and even if it's only *slightly* more functional than a standard CAI, at least it's not totally just for looks. Moral victory.
