Carbon Fiber Front End
Carbon Fiber Front End
Do you guys think a whole carbon fiber front end would look ghetto/ricey? Ex: CF hood, fenders, front bumper, and front lip? Obviously, i'd have to get the fenders and bumper custom made....but just want your opinions

if you have a black car or are planning on getting a custom paint job it would look awesome otherwise it looks kinda goofy. id still do it because one my car is black and 2 i car more about the dropped weight than i do about how it looks. also taking off that much weight from the front might make the wheel hop start all over again.
"You can get every thing but the 1/4 panels in carbon fiber very expensive but it saves almost 500lbs"
That just doesnt make any sense. I do autobody for a living, so Im replacing/sanding/painting panels on a daily basis. Have you ever held a sheetmetal fender? They really dont weigh much at all. You can hold up a cobalt fender with your finger. There were pages and pages on wieght recuction over at thirdgen.org (3rd generation F bodies) And I tried to do all the research I could on the topic to get my 88 IROC down to roughly sub 3100 lbs so far. On those cars fiberglass is the obvious alternative for most body panels and maybe a couple CF hoods. the fiberglass fenders weigh 3 lbs less than the sheetmetal ones for a 3rd gen. And the doors are really heavy but unless your gonna ditch the glass, the outer doorskin doesnt weigh anything, and you need the doorshell for support/protection. I KNOW that CF weighs quite a bit less than CF, but still u gotta outweigh the cost. I only decided to replace the heavy ass hood with a nice glass Harwood cowl. As for the rest, I just replaced all the steel that I could with aluminum, (heads, intake manifold, rear drums, and soon to come driveshaft). Also things like headers weigh a lot less than manifolds. As for custom CF bumpers...they would cost a crap-load. what happens when a car hits it kinda hard? Plastic bumper covers can be replaced or repaired for reasonable money, with CF, replacing it for a lotta money would usually be the case. Also called "bump"ers for a reason, they spring back. As for the 500 lb savings? The hood decklid and spoiler replacments would save the most weight, and Id say those would be 150 lbs savings tops. Also we have a CF 3000 GT hood at the shop. The guy didnt have hood pins put in, only the stock latch and it came off on the highway and ripped off at the hinges and almost hit a few people when it landed. It looks durable, but not repairable,at least not without pinting over that look everyone pays for
