Carbon Fiber Project
Carbon Fiber Project
I've never worked with carbon fiber on my own yet but I plan on giving it a try. Maybe some of you guys could try to turn you interiors into all CF, thats what I'd like to do once I get good at working with this stuff.

So I decided I wanted to coat a bunch of my OEM parts in carbon fiber to make my car interior all pretty. Since most sites charge hundreds of dollars for small pices, I figured I'd give it a shot myself. I got a bunch of parts together and borrowed my buddies house since he's out of town and I didn't have enough room. Here's some shots, I'll have more as things get finished. I should have all these totally done by the end of the weekend. I just want to say these pics don't do the pieces justice, the Carbon/Kevlar fabric is just beautiful, the red shines like cut glass...

The parts, all painted and ready to get their coating of resin

The resin applied and the fabric draped

Here's what it should look like, then you've gotta smooth it to get the air bubbles out.

My gas door... the only piece I did in CF

Using a blowtorch to get the bubbles out works like a charm... just keep that bish moving or you'll start a serious fire lol.

The spark plug cover after a flow coat.

I need to take a pic w/o flash, once it gets bright enough to show up good I will. Too much of the red color comes out with the flash... these parts look like stained glass windows, it's awesome.
Here's my finished Gas Door..

Here are some closeups I took after the (I hope) final coat of resin. This gives you a good idea what it really looks like...

Although these aren't totally finished pics, they are damn close. Well, the gas door is done, but I still need to drill holes in the IM cover and finish up the holes in the spark plug cover. I broke my rotozip bit...

Ooooo... isn't that nice?

For those of you wanting to get a look at a curved piece.

Another view.

In the engine bay.

Further out.

Gas door.

This still needs to be trimmed on the bottom so it doesn't fit right now, but I'm too f-ing tired to do the rest, so here's a teaser.
Heres' a list of **** I bought and used...:
FG-CFT5750 CF fabric
FG-CK99250 Carbon Kevlar red/black (there are tons of other colors too)
EPOX-635312 15 minute epoxy
All from this site: http://www.shopmaninc.com/products.html
Then you need sandpaper; 400, 600, 800 and 1000 grit
Urethene spray on clear coat
Misc: Blowtorch or eat-a-bubble to get rid of the bubbles
Sponge brushes or some kind of brush
Acetone solvent to clean tools and whatever
Wax cups to mix epoxy in
Plastic spoons or some other stirrer

its like fiberglass but carbon fiber you dont have to use the same amount because it is stronger than fiberglass!
you use a resin (non yellow) to harden the fiber to what ever your trying to mold, make sure when your done to put on more coat of resin (thin amount) and use wet sand paper until smooth...doing this will make it more glossy and a better show peice

we worked with silver carbon fiber to do door pieces and a playstation compartment on a customers car...i dunnowhy but the silver was not so great quality wise to work with as compared to the black.
Anyway, looks really good! wish they would make a purple and black weave. i need to get my hands on some of that.
also how did u get rid of the air bubbles. i know sometimes they use a vacuum and draw the air out somehow...

exactly. ill just say this. and i will get slammed for it. carbon fiber looks cool. but its not visibly good for a everyday car. with our cars. door panels will be hard as hell because its 1 full piece. it will be very hard to get it in the small cracks. and u dont want a ghetto looking project. like the 12th picture down. might i say first. your doing something hard ass crap and its hard. but see the parts where he messed up on picture 12. now to fix that. he will have to start over. i have bought 2 carbon fiber sheets and ruined them. ITS HARD. im just waiting on them to get my carbon fiber back in stock. but i MIGHT do my interior. because that silver trim is real cheap quality and expensive to replace
