Carbon Fiber Trunk fun... warning it is a pain
Carbon Fiber Trunk fun... warning it is a pain
So my brand new ViS carbon fiber trunk came in yesterday.. i was extremely excited. the first thing i did was throw it in my back seat and then took a ride to my friends shop. what was expected to be a short job, maybe 2 hours at most actually wound up taking about 5. i wanted my stock wing on the new carbon fiber trunk (something different for once instead of putting the carbon fiber trunk on and leaving wingless) especially since i have the carbon fiber center piece on my wing. so i knew we would have to drill the holes for the wing. then i noticed the holes were not drilled for the bolts that hold in the reverse lights.... no big deal. so we drilled them out. after that we realized every hole on the trunk (for the rubber stoppers and the cover that snaps over so you dont see all the wiring) was to small. so we drilled all the holes out and made them bigger. then we had to use a hole saw and drill holes through the fiberglass to get to the carbon fiber... this was for the wing. it was about this time that we noticed a fiberglass piece that ran right behind the hole of the 3rd break light (i guess for structural integrity when molding?) however this piece was so close to the hole that the 3rd break light could not fit in. so we took a sawzaw and hacked that out. we finally got the reverse lights to clip in and i was a little happier at this point... then we tried to put the lock and the hinge back in. of course... the hole for the lock was to small. so we filed and filed and filed till it finally fit through. then when we tried to put the hinge in, the hole for that was also to small. out came the file again. after that we finally had it all together. the 3rd break light when in fine after we cut out the fiberglass backing. the next part was extremely fun. im not sure if any of you guys have ever tried taking our stock wing off, but it is an extreme pain. the tape/glue gm uses to hold the wing on is some crazy stuff. so after about an hour and a half of a heat gun and an entire roll of dental floss, we finally cut trough the crap and got the wing off. the part i was most worried about, drilling through the carbon fiber for the wing, turned out to be the easiest. we made the measurements, drilled using tape so as to not crack the carbon fiber, and the wing went right on. we popped the wing back out, threw some 3M on it and put it back in and bolted it down. the measurement was right on. so all was starting to go well. until we realized how ginormous the holes are on the hinges for the trunk. i guess chevy was really lazy and decided to make the biggest holes they possibly could and just put huge washers on so it was easy to line up. that was a problem for us because the screws that came with the trunk were to small to fill the big holes. so we had to find screw and big washers around the shop. the only thing we could come up with were screws that were to long. by this time it was late and everything was closed, so off to the grinder! we shortened the screws and finally had a little luck. they went in pretty easy. i was going to leave the struts off like a lot of people said to do, but surprisingly, the trunk is actually pretty heavy. so i put them on to see what would happen. we finally got a little luck when we closed the trunk and it was lined up perfectly first try!!
so we closed it and i held my hand over the trunk in case the struts were to strong for the carbon fiber. hit the trunk release on my FOB and it popped open just as it did with the OEM trunk, no problems at all. SO... after all that hassle it actually turned out perfect. i couldnt ask for it to look any better. once it gets light out i will take pics for everyone
just figured i would warn anyone who is thinking about picking one of these up.

Where did you get it from? Just wondering if there's a difference in the companies from which you purchase the trunk as far as the quality goes.
Congrats by the way, and PICS would be nice..Unless I just can't see em..lol

does the trunk pop open any higher with this on? mine is so hard to open i can barely fit my fingers underneath to open it . im hoping that when i get a carbon trunk it will open higher from less weight.
Well thanks for all the compliments guys! that alone makes it worth the trouble it was. stay tuned for daytime pics!
thats wierd, i never had problems with my OEM trunk. even though lots of people left the struts off, which was recommended, i put mine back on. i thought since it was CF it would open easy. the trunk release is works fine, just like it was OEM. no problems at all, but it was actually still kind of heavy. so i put the struts back on. it still pops open just fine, however you just have to be a little careful when opening it all the way. once the struts get going it flings the trunk open slightly fast. it doesnt harm it at all nor does it go back to far. i try to slow it with my hands every time, but naturally i forget sometimes. the first time i forgot to slow it scared the **** out of me but it was fine. just flung open pretty fast lol. i still try to remember to slow it every time tho. im leaving the struts on anyway just because it was definitely to hard to open without them.
