Disable DRLs and AutoHeadlights

Hey guys. I'm in Canada, so DRLs and auto lights work differently here.

I want to disable the DRLs and AutoHeadlights on my '07 Cobalt SS Sedan.

If I understand correctly, the DRLs can be disabled by pulling the fuse? Where is this fuse that I need to pull?

Now onto the AutoHeadlights. Yes I can turn the stalk down and it disables the autoheadlights BUT ONLY when the 'balt is in Park. As soon as I shift into Drive, the lights come on again.
How can I disable this?

EDIT- How are the AutoHeadlights activated? Light sensor? If so where is this sensor?

I would love to know how to do this also. For me, the Auto headlamps stay off only with the handbrake up (manual tranny). As soon as I put the handbrake down, they reactivate.

I'd love to be able to drive around in the evenings with the fogs on only, like all the Audi's around here are able to do...

Muahaha I can do that on my Cavy cause I disabled them and it looks sweet... but from what I understand it is not possible on Canadian Cobalts...

The fuse for the DRLs is in the engine bay, it should be labeled somewhere on which one it is. As for the autolights, I don't know of a way to completely disable them, but they are activated by the little light sensor in the dash.

Alright, I pulled the DRL fuse today, and thats one problem solved.

How does the light sensor work? Could I just put a switch in-line with it to disable autoheadlights?

I have actually taken out the ambient light sensor for the auto headlamps and it made no difference at all.......i also jumped the terminals to close the circuit on the wires and it also made no difference......not sure how it works but i think the dealer can flash the cars computer to turn them off......as far as i can tell that is the only way to shut em off.....Later

Alright, i'm betting that the sensor puts a resistance in the circuit. (if it's the same kind of photo voltaic sensor i'm thinking of)

The answer might be to replace the sensor with a resistor that mimics the resistance created when the sensor is exposed to light.

That sensor also controls your dash lighting - keep that in mind.

im not from canada, but are you saying that turning off the auto headlights isn't a possibility at all? because i know with my 06 SS/SC you can drive with just the fogs on. thats weird, canadian law?

Yeah i'm aware. The dash lighting comes on with the parking/running lights too, so it's not really hindered in function.

Yeah, auto headlights can only be turned off when not in motion.

I know it's Canadian law for DRLs, but I don't know if AutoHeadlights is law?

Either way, the police don't care, and I like to be able to control my lighting thank you very much

Must be nice to have a US balt then. In Canada they've changed the function of the 'knob', thus the reason for this thread...

can you at least have them on when the car is parked? you know if you want to use the headlights to see outside the car.

now that i typed that it seems like a stupid question.
do you have any pics of the knob on the blinker "stick"? i would like to see whats different.

The stick looks identical, but the programming in the computer is different.

I can turn off AutoHeadlights when in PARK, but as soon as I shift into gear, the lights come on.

Either I take out the photo voltaic sensor, and replace it with an appropriate resistor, or I just mount an LED to shine on the sensor, so I can turn the 'mod' on and off.

Yea, the DRL's are the easy part. The darn sensor isn't. And you can't put a defeat that fools the car into thinking the E brake is on, because then cruise doesn't work, and the DIC pings at you.

If you really want to, you can cut the sensor out of the circuit, and use the Ohm setting on a multimeter to test the sensor's resistance when it's exposed to bright light.

A resister put in place with the same value as this reading should disable AutoHeadlights

You can always pull the fuse out in the engine bay, however, you're going to lose gauge lights I believe.

Was just wondering if anybody else disabled their DRL's. not worried about the auto-headlights, just want the DRL's off for my HID's.

If the 08s are the same as 07s, just pull the DRL fuse in the engine bay.

I lucked out, a week after i got my HIDs installed my daytime running lights stop working but the auto lights still works fine

When I start my car and put it in drive the lights stay off, when night time comes around they come on.

the sensor (its not a light sensor its a daylight sensor it knows different between normal lights and sunlight) is the little black round ball looking thing on your dash on the driver side.

I'm almost about to just stick a led with a small battery over the sensor and just cover it with tape lol, fake brightness.
