dying headliner while still in the car?

I've sprayed me old cars headliner while it was still in the car, it didn't overspray and looked pretty good. Has anyone done a cobalts headliner while it was still in the car? or is it not too bad taking it out of the car? I'm just worried it wont go back in right or it might crack

what do you think? take it out? or just tape everything, throw some blankets down and let'er rip?

its easy enough to spend an hour to take it out for someone who hasent done it before...... you need a torx bit(cant remember the size, little flat head, 7mm screw driver and a panel popper. thats about all it takes along with some patience.

just take it out... its easy

remove a pillars
remove upper rear seatbelt bolt going into the c pillars.
remove c pillars
remove visors
remove sunroof switch and mic(if you have it or dome light)
remove visor clips(the ones that let the visor clamp in place)
remove the clip in the back center of the headliner
remove weatherstrips on the side

out it comes... getting the slider out it easy too.

Headliner

I would Definitely take it out. I would prefer to cover it. Buy some 3m interior spray and lay some new material over the top in the color you want. I used Suede on mine.

I've had awful experience with re-upholstering crap, it ALWAYS ALWAYS sags!

and I've used the 3m stuff and I followed the instructions to the letter, but damn it, on the first hot humid day, boom, the material SAGS! ugh

theres no such thing as good contact spray from a can.... only good stuff is used via spray gun.

If you do use the can, spray both the headliner and the material, let it sit until dry, then lay the fabric. I've seen better results from doing that than just spraying everything and putting it all back together...

To take the seatbelts out, you need a T-50

I used that Dupli-Color spray dye stuff on my headliner. Went from light grey to black. Took about two cans to cover it really well and get an even finish. It did harden up the fabric quite a bit to begin with, but after some time it wasnt too bad any more. Now a year or so later, its held up really well. There have only been a few places were it needs to be lightly touched up but thats only from scraping stuff on the headliner as I put it in or out of the car. For about $10, it help up pretty well.

Eventually I will get mine professionally reupholstered in some sort of black material, but for now the spray dye stuff works alright.
