FAIL Mod

I decided to attempt painting my chrome stock headlights a different colour. Everyone went black, so I was thinking about red. It was a close choice.

I followed that thread that said to use an oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes. Here's what happened after 15 minutes at less than 200 degrees. (Put them in at room temp in oven)

So, after being super pissed off that now I need new headlights, I decided to screw with them, do a terrible and quick paint job. I nightshaded the lens because I had left over from tail lights.

So, here they are, terribly placed in the car.

I'm tihnking about going crazy. Painting my next set purple, potentially with a purple pinstripe. That or gold with gold wheels. Any opinions, or should I be like everyone else and black it out.

Hey guys, yeah it's Guelph Ontario. It's Fahrenheit, I know how to work an oven. I'm thinking because it's a smaller oven, I had to put them on the bottom rack, so the oven roasted the bottom of them. I kept checking on them, and I thought the smell was the melting glue. Once it was about 15 minutes I figured I'd check to see if I could move the glue a bit. Turned out like this.

How much do they sell headlights at a wrecker's for?

I'm going to attempt again after my exams, but this time with a blow dryer. I'm thinking of red again. Any other suggestions other than black?

Just take a heat gun and go along the sealed edges.

Takes a little longer but this doesn't happen.

OP, did you use wood blocks underneath the lights to separate them from the metal rack?

I'm thinking you put them directly on the rack... hence why they melted the way they did.

I actually put mine on the rack and they never melted.... hmmmm I guess it would depend on if it was a GAS or electric oven. Mine is gas.

I did this multiple times (at least 7) when I had my Tacoma. I used to do them all the time for other people. The one time I had a bad result (not near that bad though) was because the light shifted and touched the metal. It burned part of the lens. We covered it with eyelids, but obviously that wouldn't help here, lol. You have to insulate them from the hot surfaces. You just need the hot air.

Straight on the rack like an idiot.

It's mostly the housing thats screwed. You can see the glue that's left on the lens though. CHecking wreckers today, see what I can stir up

lmao iv done so many headlights i cant remember, but iv never had this problem, or anythign close. i think your oven might suck or you put it directly on the heating element and not on the rack lmao. i never really keep track of how many minutes there in there though, i just pop them in, wait a bit, take em out try to pry them apart, if the sealent isnt gooey enough i just stick them back in. like 175 - 200* i actually forgot they were in the oven in the past when i went on this site mid process and then like 30 minutes later ran down and they were still just fine lol
