Carbon fiber is lighter and more expensive. Fiberglass is made of SiO2 molecules and carbon fiber is made of essentially carbon atoms like graphite. In the fiberglass, the Si molecule has a higher molecular weight than carbon. Si has a molecular weight of 28 and the O has a molecular weight of 16. Carbon has a molecular weight of 12.

So, carbon fiber is stronger and lighter per given volume.

Take my word on that, i'm a chemist.
