G5 Cluster

Ok I heard that the Pontiac G5's come with a gauge cluster...? is this true? I know they come that way in the G6.

I think this is bad ass cuz I want to try to convert my dash lights over to red (the easy way)

haha ok sorry, what I'm saying is I've heard the G5 clusters have red lights... instead of the regular colored lights like in the cobalts... I was figuring instead of ripping apart the stock cobalt cluster and trying to change the color of the lights I might as well just get a G5 cluster and swap them.

basically I just want to know if the G5 clusters light up red like the G6's do? (from the factory)

Also guys I have a question about swapping them out, I saw the how-to to do it, but I know when I swapped clusters in my cavalier, there was an anti-theft lock where the car wouldn't crank up, and there was a specail way of getting it to work.

Does the Cobalt have this or can I just plug in the new cluster and have it automatically work?

No the Cobalt guages are plug and play. Should take you 20-30 min to complete this. Works amazing.

Awesome, I'm going to check ebay later and see what they have there... I have an 08' so as far as I know 05-06 will not work, but 07-08 will correct?

Yeah cuz I know for the 07 and up cars the radio is different and makes it harder to install an aftermarket head unit cuz instead of a wiring harness, there's a small computer on the back of the stock h/u... so I'm guessing the update in technology made the clusters not compatible, the gauges themselves will work but the DIC won't... I know an 08 to an 08 will be a direct swap, but not 100% positive about an 07'... can anyone confirm this?

yeah you'll need to get an 07+ gauge cluster.... mines an 06 and I bought 07 G5 gauges and the tripometer didn't work so I had to swap the faces....

Awesome. Damn I can't get over how sexy the red lighting is...

I looked on ebay and all they basically have are 07's so hopefully I'll be ordering one soon.

I have a 2007 cobalt ls with the g5 gauge face in it. The faces are super easy to swap and look awesome. They glow red at night and are white faced by day. The only problem is that if you swap entire clusters the milage and odometer will be completely wrong, also illegal. To swap the faces, simply unclip the tabs holding the clear part onto the cluster, remove the needles by pulling straight up, and remove the gauge face.
When re-installing the g5 face take care to notice the position of the needles when removed. A good trick I used is to remove your factory cluster, unclip the clear part, exposing your gauge face and needles. At this time bolt the cluster back in the dash minus the clear part. turn the ignition to the on position, take note of the needle position. pull the needles straight off. Install the g5 face in place of the cobalt face. Reinstall needles. Turn ignition on. Check that the needles indicate as per previously. you can then replace the clear part while the cluster is still in the dash. reassemble dash and enjoy! I love mine.

I thought the car itself stored the mileage and whatnot... not the cluster??

That's how it was in my Cavalier anyway when I swapped for a Z24 cluster....

Yeah its in the ECU not the cluster. I just switched mine to an SS 140mph cluster works fine. The cluster essentially works as just a display. EX: The computer says show 40 mph and 2.5k rpm, so it does. Same with the DIC information.

BCM carries the mileage not the ECU. So you can exchange clusters all day long.

Yep install takes about 20 minutes. Get an extra long extension for the job. It works wonders.
