But what exactly do I need to ask for from the dealer as far as paint goes? I'm going to need Rally Yellow. Would it be cheaper to get matched at a paint shop?

Well there 5 oz. cans, so probably 2 or 3 I would think. And def. post up some pics when you get done, I'm curious to see how they'll look.

 

I seen a little honda hatchback with red color matched headlights and they looked nice. They were from factory too. I was just gonna go black but i wanna be different

 

Yea I've seen them Honda's as well, I think they are the Honda Fit. I have the black headlights and I love the way they look, but the color matched should come out pretty nice. Keep us updated.

Yea, I think the clear coat would make it look better, but I guess it depends on how shiny it looks with just the yellow paint.

Good luck getting that paint. I ordered a can of victory red when i first heard about it for that scrach on my front fender i showed you Dan. Im still waiting for it to come in almost 3 months later!!!!!

 

Really? I just ordered a can today and they told me they would have in a week. Did they tell you a week as well? If so, I could be waiting a while .

 

Im going directly to the dealer where i got the car as asking for it. If they can't get it or its too expensive I will look around else where.

I manage a paint and body shop so it better look good. I also blacked out my grille and front emblem. The ss decal on the windshield is a nice touch I think. I did not use rattle can paint though. I used the real stuff. Lasts much longer.

 

Those 5 oz cans go a long way! I did all 4 of my rims with only 2 cans! I'm talking like 8 or so coats each! If you get the one from GM, its really high quality. Just go light and work your way up. One can will do both headlights easy! Order more though, cause you will always want to paint something else!

Should I use some Lacquer clear coat on the base coat to make it match the gloss of the paint job on the car? Or is it glossy enough?

 

I don't know...remember, its going to be HOT in there from the lights. I don't know how that might react with all the heat. If you sand it down smooth enough and be carefull with painting, it should have a decent gloss to it.

 

Ok, I did this on my first SS/SC. Tkae your paint code to a paint shop that does PPG paint. They got me a pint for $13. Had a place spray the lights after i masked and clear coat them. Of course, that might not work if you don't have a hook up at a paint shop. Get a couple cans from GM is the next best I can suggest. Here's how mine turned out.....

 

^^^^That also came out looking good man . marerick007, you said you used the GM spray paint on your rims? Is it strong enough to hold up against chipping though? Did you use the black GM spray paint as well, or just the orange? Just curious as I am may end up painting my rims as well, just doing them differently.

Lacquer paints are now longer legal in the U.S. for automotive purposes. All paint jobs produced from the auto manufacturers us a besecoat clearcoat formula. The basecoat is the color. When the basecoat is sprayed, it is flat. It does not have a gloss. You spray clear coat over it to get the shine. That is the process that all auto manufacturers use.

Now what brand should you use? Personal preference really. Dupont, PPG, Spies Hecker, and Sickens are all quality paint manufacturers. I would shy away from the lesser known brands due to there poor UV capabilities. There is no such thing as GM paint, Honda paint, Ford paint etc. They all use paint manufacturers like the ones listed above. Quality materials will result in a quality job.
