headliners

okay boys and girls its been a while since i've posted with a question but i own a 2007 cobalt ss and inside this car is that beige/ tan headliner and pillars, well i have painted the pillar and am looking to ditch the ugly headliner. However i dont really know where to start. Is it better to dye the current one, wrap or purchase a new one, any prices from people who have done it themselves and people who have had it done professionally

I am going to do my headliner soon, just trying to find the time to do it... I'll tell you what I was planning on doing so you can get some ideas.

I think there are two ways to do it, one is you can take off the cloth and sand off the foam (or whatever it is) till you get to the shell of the headliner. You would then have to use some foam backed cloth/material.

That seemed like to much work for me lol, so I am doing the second method below.

I am going to be leaving the original tan cloth and spraying adhesive over it. I am using my friends compressor, bought a harbor freight spray gun (purple one) since I won't be reusing it and it's cheap, and got some cloth. I've never used it before but it's like a carbon fiber cloth from Pyspeed. For the adhesive I am using "DAP Landau Top & Trim High Heat Resistant Contact Cement," it's in a blue can.

You might also want a squeegee with a felt tip to help smooth out the material on the headliner.

Prices:
Compressor: free since I borrowed
Harbor Freight Spray gun: around $16
Adhesive, DAP Landau Top & Trim High Heat Resistant Contact Cement: around $40 shipped (Ebay)
Material: depends on what you choose as cloth.

I can take some pictures if you would like of the material/tools, most of them can be found via Google.

do not paint the thing.... they all turn out like **** and look horrible before to logn

go get some....

bulk fabric (make sure its at least 4' wide, you'll need 4x6 just to be safe)
spray adhesive
dynaroller
a partner
quick hands

spray headliner in sections and lay the fabric on, smooth it out with the roller then proceed on.

once finished cut past the edges and hot glue them into place

dont paint/dye it.
if your going to recover it. recover it with the material your using and put that right over the existing cloth no point in trying to remove the old cloth.

Try this place for the fabric. Lots of choices and they are upholstery grade unlike the ones at Johannes.
Headliner Fabric and Kits
stick to using the gun rather than get one of their spray canned glues.

You can also use a wire brush to remove foam and an 80 grit for corners or hard to reach areas and remember to lay ur material and start from the the center do one half and then the other half
