HID questions....

OK so Me and my brother have been looking into getting some HID's for my Cobalt and his Redline. We saw "Uneeks" and they look interesting but we did alot of other searching and saw many other interesting kits from companies like Xtec, Mccoula, and phillips.

I had a few questions though I thought I would ask before I went off and bought a kit.

1.) First question is some kits have just ballasts others have ballasts and igniters. I know the ones with just 1 are together, but I was hoping someone would say there is space to bolt both the igniter and ballast without causing problems? Cobalt's and redlines are new territory for me, so if someone went the route of getting a kit with both can you tell me if theres plenty of space or if its easy to do?

2.) Color temperature. I have seen so many different color looking 6000 and 8000 K kits. They dont seem to stay the same between companies. What I want is HID's like the beemers. I want something thats white and bright with a decent ammount of blue. I dont want solid blue, and I dont want everything my headlights touch to look blue. I want something that will have a nice hint of blue but nothing too wild where I get pulled over because they are the color on the side of this forum.

3.) In most cars that come with HID's stock they dont have an ugly ass yellow driving light next to them, or if they do they are really dim. Ive noticed in the cobalt SS that the yellow light is pretty bright and I think will take away from the HID's light. Is there a way to make that less bright (like a less bright yellow bulb or something) or what?

the lights i got from uneek are 8000k and they are hella sweet. I got led lights for the lamps right next to them which are a bit dimmer and look hella sweet with the hids, or you can get the superwhite bulbs that are silver tinted and those are much much dimmer than stock, i would say too dim.

There are pics of an install in the HALO HID thread:
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...light=halo+hid

The High-Intensity Discharge (HID) kits I sell are Xenon short arc lamps. Xenon short arc lamps are a source of artificial light. Powered by electricity, they use ionized Xenon gas to produce a bright white light that closely mimics natural daylight. Additions of mercury and salts of sodium and scandium improve significantly the lumen output of the lamp, the xenon gas being used only to provide instant light upon the ignition of the lamp.

Each bulb is a fused quartz arc tube with tungsten metal electrodes at each end. Fused quartz is a man-made material manufactured principally from sand. It is non-crystalline, and in a high purity state is a useful material for high performance fluid and gas delivery. Its mechanical and thermal properties are superior to that of glass due to its purity.

The ballast and ignitor have been integrated into one unit. You'll see other vendors selling kits with the ballast and ignitor as separate components, this is common among older HID kits. We only offer a strong lightweight Aluminum Ballast & Ignitor combo because technology and manufacturing costs have gotten to the point were it can now be offered at resonable prices to our customers, who always demand up-to-date equipment. Not only does it make for a much cleaner install but you'll also have the benefit of a well designed quality ballast/ignitor combo assembled in Japan.

I know that many of you may be skeptical to buy aftermarket HID's because of horror stories you may have heard about somebody's inadequate HID kit. But let me tell you, I am a firm believer in providing excellent customer service to any person who buys a kit from me, any issues you may have with a kit purchased would be fixed immediatley, and by me personally. I even pay for shipping both ways! Although, this would be on the rare occasion that a defect is encountered.

Im just like you guys, Im extremely critical about what goes on my car. I would only recommend something that I would use on my car (which I do).

I hope that answers some of your questions. If you still have questions please PM me.

Get the HALO HID KIT in 6K. It sounds like what you are looking for, they have lots of white light with a hint of blue.

Man, I was on my way home tonight and was in front of a Cobalt. I looked in my rearview mirror and thought, "man these guys really do need HID's".

way to brainwash Uneek.

Question: "what is the difference between 8k and 10k distance wise i want real blue but i wanna be able to see in front of me!"

Answer: Of the two, 8K will be more towards what your looking for, the more blue you get, the less visible light is actually projected on the road.

Question: "I have seen so many different color looking 6000 and 8000 K kits. They dont seem to stay the same between companies. What I want is HID's like the beemers."

Answer: You won't get HID's that look like the beemers do because they all have 4100K bulbs. The color you see is made by the projectors. These aftermarket kits are cheap imitation HID kits. Yes, they do have real bulbs (though rebased), and they have ballasts and igniters, but they only resemble true HIDs if you were to see a bemmer or lexus from further away. Sit ina beemer or lexus, and these kits won't come close to them in terms of true visible light since their light is actually "white" and these kits have blueish light, or even sometimes ultraviolet light when we're talking past 10K. There's a color temp chart in one of these useless HID threads if you want to take the time to look. I can't remember where I posted it.

In short, although I hate these kits and I lothe the owners of the cars with kits due to glare, I'll contribute this. They are brighter than stock halogens obviously, but wait till problems happen down the road. Also, pray that one of the components don't wear out. Also, if your looking for good lighting with these kits, try to go more white and less blue. The more blue, the less it'll help your cause, and seperates the functionality from the looks of the mod.
