My Tails and Side Markers...

My buddy is having his freind who works at a paint shop take black paint and clear coat and painting my lights. He did it for him on his car already and i will say it looks much cleaner that VHT nightshades. I will post pics when i get this all done im kinda worried it will be to dark but o well it will look very nice and not the dull VHT color. Has anyone else done this?

dont do it... vht and clearcoat is the only way you should do it..... mixing black and clear blocks the light... vht is a dye and lets light come trhough

Well hopefully he has nice cops around his neck of the woods then.
VHT or whatever everyone uses isn't dull if you clear it afterwards.

are you shitting me? you must be dumb..... we do custom paint at our shop.... black PAINT is opaque. when mixed with clear to thin down it still is, and when you go to spray it, its blotchy because its PAINT. No kind of PAINT will ever pass light of look as good as a nightshaded light done properly.

Dye on the other hand (polycarbonate dye to be exact "VHT") Is a translucent dye that actually etches in to the plastic, hence why it is flat when you DONT clear on top of it. When you clear on top of the VHT it gives the resilience of pure black, but when light is exposed to it you can see all of it.

Thanks

im on the fence. on one hand what you say makes perfect sense.. however. i have seen what the OP is talking about done in person and it looks okay. I do see the difference. it looks okay and does work however the difference is noticeable

They came out great, my cousin owns his own paint shop so this is definitely the route I'm taking with my lights.

I think the tinted tails with the clear reverse centers look dopey. I have full tinted tails and have no problem seeing at night..

ok... nightshades would be exactly the same as taking a candy black toner and reducing it down , and spray the desired amount of layers to acheive the darkness you want. and yes.. it is see through because candy paint is a dye. i have done it before

this right here, i just did this today with my tails, sidemarkers, and 3rd brake light. I did a total of 2 light coats with nightshades and 1 coat of professional clear to make them shine, mine ended up like this..
1st coat/no clear

2nd coat w/ me putting the 1 coat of clear on them

And the finished pics..
