Need YOUR Input on a Potential Factory Option GM Active Rear Spoiler
Need YOUR Input on a Potential Factory Option GM Active Rear Spoiler
Hi,
My name is Mark Strasnick and I am working in a group at Lehigh University for a project with GM. We are making an active rear spoiler for the Cobalt SS. It would be sold as factory option from GM. Right now we are still gathering market research and developing the idea further. We would greatly appreciate any constructive feedback, ideas, comments, etc on the current wing, what you would like to see on an active rear spoiler, or anything else that would be relevant. Thank you and I really look forward to seeing what you guys (and gals) have to say!

Blur- We won't be starting designing it for a few weeks right now we are trying to find out what people would want in an active spoiler so we can put it into our designs.
No one in the team has driven an SS yet so we don't have the first hand knowledge of issues with the current wing or what could specifically be improved in the eyes of the consumer. Stuff like the stock wing wobbles over 60mph and its too big are exactly the type of stuff we are looking to hear that can really help us figure out what we are going to make.
So keep 'em coming! I will try to keep everyone as updated as possible with what we are doing on our end with your comments.

The spoiler is defintely a loose one. Its really flexible and the top blade moves around alot. Like when going through a car wash it flexes and moves all over the place. Everyone goes for the low profile wing because its outta the way and it doesn't obstruct the rearview.
you should put canards.." i think thats how its spelled" on the front of the car if anything i mean at higher speeds the front end tends to be alittle lose.. thats just my take on it idk if anybody else has that problem..
I personally love my wing. At first I didnt but when I seen someone driving the other way on the highway and I looked back at their car I thought it was cool. Since then I have grown to love it, it gives our cars personality. As far as an active wing I am thinking that you are following in the footsteps of the Chrysler Crossfire. The wing that adjusts acording to speed ? Really there is no need for it and I highly doubt there would be a market for something like that. It would be way to expensive.
A) make a spoiler that allows you to use your rearview mirror, and actually see out the back
B) attach it so it doesn't look like it's giong to fall off evere time you shut the trunk
C) As stated above, it should NOT flop around on the highway
D) Watch a "Fast and Furious" movie of your choice, and think of the complete opposite

I think the obstruction comes more from the weird placement of our back windows, and the high ghetto booty that our cars have. Then put a larger spoiler on top of that and bingo bango your rear view mirror is useless.

not true... i have the low spoiler, and can see out my back perfectly
I want to see a 3 point mounting system with a wing height in between the current low pro and hi profile wings. The thing that drives me nuts about my high profile wing is that it doesn't block out the headlights behind me, and covers up the exact spot where the roof lights on police cars sit. I never know if I have a cop right behind me or not and it pisses me off.
I like the looks of the current wing but it's functionality is questionable. It also make using the rear view mirror useless. Like others I hate how it wobbles at highway speeds and when you close the trunk.
I'm not sure an active wing is all that usefull on a FWD car. So unless a RWD Cobalt is on the way I don't know if I would spend the R and D time and money on it.

I have the low wing and I'd love getting my wing on a high wing without hesitation. Just makes the car have a personallity. Even if it renders the rear view mirrior, I never use that freaking mirror. It's just taking space in the main window
No you guys arent getting it, if the ass end wasnt so high we could have this large spoiler and see just fine. Of course with a small spoiler you can see better duh, seriously you guys gotta read what I post. I didnt say the spoiler had nothing to do with it, i just said that there were other factors also.
