New bumper, Have a paint Question!!

My question is, How should i go about painting this???... i never have problems with runs or cracking when i paint, but everytime i paint something plastic like this it flakes off... lol what should i do? how can i paint this without haveing it flake off?
aww im jealous. when you get it all done post some pics. im going to put one of these on my lt soon, with the ss/tc grilles
edit: honestly you should get it painted professionally, but if you paint it yourself you'll need to scuff it and then paint, then clearcoat
spend the extra few hundred and get it done right at a body shop

If you gonna do it urself I would go from a 60 , to 140 and then to 320 grit. Sand it till it don't shine. Apply adhesion promoter and then sandable primer. Sand it down well so there no orange peel look to it. Apply color. (I would get this at a chevy dealer). Then the key is the cleArcoat. Don't get the duplicolor crap. Get something called kk7 clearcoat. It's a kit that comes with an aerosol that hooks up to a bottle. Where a mixure of the two liquids go. It's alot stronger and will hold up better than regular clearcoat.

Yeah. I've used the kk8. It's eggshell clear. It's some really tuff stuff.
I mean, getting it done professionally will be best. But I think this is second. I've had bumpers painted by body shops and it still peels off horribly. I used the kk8 on my evo x paint job on my front bumper and no chipping whatsoever so far. It's been a month and a half now and just one deep chip. Must of been a huge pebble or somethin. Unlike with my other car, tons of tiny chips in a month.
You checked out the link? Did you read the details? Pretty expensive for clearcoat? Huh

That bumper isnt painted is it? If it isnt then dont go anywhere near it with 60 or 150 grit. All you need to do is get a grey scotchbrite and scuff the bumper till theres no shine left. Then you can apply your color and clear coat. If you go at it with 60 you will get sand scratches that will be very hard to sand out of plastic. Good luck with the painting let me know how it turns out
yeah i checked out the link , the price isnt that bad considering everyone was saying it'd cost 200+ for a shop to do it... and i like doing it myself =] so i will definatly look into that!! thanks
this is not going to look well, it sounds like you have 0 paint experience ><
trust meeeeeeeeee, go to a body shop. at least call a few and see, maybe theres a smaller shop that will do it for cheaper - im sure they need the work with this economy

ok man as far as the bumper goes you need to wet sand with 220 and if the water turns black your golden but if its not then you need to take to a body shop and have to them bake it to get the plastic chemicals out. but if you sand it and it turns the water black you need to seal it then color then clear but in those steps add a flex additive so that it wont flake off. trust me on this im a trained painter.
