Q: Tint your own windows
Q: Tint your own windows
I would consider myself very good with vinyl and an overall crafty person. I made my own eyelids that contoured to the body of the headlight with no air bubbles. For those who have tinted windows before, exactally how different is it from installing vinyl? I guess not much different. At the current time, I don't have time to make an appointment to get my windows tinted so I figure I'd just order one of those precut window tint kits and do it when I get back from work. Also do you have any tips or pointers?
Thanks
Thanks

I wouldnt do it yourself. Most non professional tink jobs come out super craptacular. Tint from a tint shop is heat activated adhesive and is usually very clear. They usually put this on via a blow dryier like device, and use and exacto knife to cut it to the right size, and usually get it under your door seals and such to keep it from rolling up when you roll your windows up and down. Tint you buy by the roll is usually really thick, and has a fogginess to it and I believe is just regular adhesive. This makes it very difficult to get everything right as far as bubbles etc. Also the adhesive sucks and usually will cause it to peel and look like crap on hot days/cold days.
This is my experiences from the friends I have who have done this them selves. I know you like to do things yourself and would go ahead and try if you want to save some money, but personally I dont think it will come out all that great.
GL either way, Tint rules.

Yea, but I think most film sold as direct fit and such is like a sticker. I dont think its the same type of stuff as sungard etc. its not heat activated it just sticks period. Thats how the older stuff was when I was a ricer and tried to tint my windows and my friends. The crap stuff from pep boys and online. You just stuck it on and it was very hard to squegy and always came lose and looked crappy.
IF YOU MUST DO IT YOURSELF...go buy your pre cut tint from a shop that tints windows professionally as their tint is of the highest quality
The crap you buy at auto part stores,Wal Mart, etc. is of the crappiest quality. Take your time and don't over heat took me 2 tries to get my old cavi lookin right
Should've just took it in the first time
you'll also get warranty through a shop
The tint I will be getting is the same tint that is used at the shop. I think I may bite the bullet and attempt it. I have no problem taking my time, I think I can manage!
Also $50 vs $200
I think I will attempt it

let me shed some light.
20 years experience tinting...
1 it is pressure sensitive, heat is to quick tac edges, or to heat shrink.
2 i also do vinyl graphics, and tint is similar but very different. it is transparent, and shows everything.
3 quality of film is key. metallized beats dyed. auto parts store tint blows goat.
4 if you like your car, take it to a pro; unless your satisfied with second rate.
any questions? madico is one of the best and out since 1944.
p.s. ive been retired form tint for a bit, and refuse to do anyones but my own, so dont ask. if your in edmonton area, i will refer you.

Actually, if you can refer me the best price with best quality, would surely enjoy that.
Actually me and a couple of my friends got ours done for $99 bucks each. We did 50% which seems like the cops won't bother you here in ny with that. If they wanted to be dicks they could. Also call around there is also someone in my area that will actually come to YOU and do it.

50 vs 200 vs 250 (if you do it wrong)
Trust me when I say, I dont care how good you think you are, you wont do as good of a job as a tint shop PERIOD.
i had mine done professionally...about 170 for 2 fronts, 2 small sides and back windows, and I'm covered against bubbles, scratches, and peeling for as long as i own the car.
If my tint even shows the smallest bubble i take it back no questions asked. Sometimes it's easier to just spend the extra cash for the piece of mind, quality, and less headache.

I set my appointment up a few days in advance. I took my car over before work and just dropped it off. A friend of mine took me back when it was done and I picked it up and went home.
I mean how quickly are you looking to get it done? If you setup an appointment now you could probably get put in on Friday or something. I dont know how far away from Elsemere you live but thats where cindy's is located. Theres also Aeyers custom shop up near airport road that did one of my other cars. I personally think Cindys did a better job though.
