Shift Boot Delete

So I decided to try and make a gated shifter plate out of some spare aluminum plate I had.

Problem is the the plate sits so low on the shift stick, and the gears are spaced too close together, there isn't enough room to allow for individual slots for each gear.

I would have to build up the console around the shifter to a point where the stick has enough left and right play for individual slots.

That seemed like too much work (for now).

So this is what I have come up with.

Just an aluminum plate cut to fit, wrapped if faux carbon fibre, and silicon'd in place.

Then I glued some stretchy material underneath to fill the space.

Quick trip to the hardware store for some copper, and the shaft is covered with shiny brass look

Feedback Please!

Need someone to 3D print that bitch and make it look clean. Then paint or put vinyl on it.

Great idea.

This was my first attempt, and ya, it's a little rough. Originally I wanted to use the bare aluminum plate, and carve the numbers into it. But by the time I was done cutting the plate, it was all marked up. It was a piece of diamond plate, so it was a bitch to cut. So I through on the faux carbon. I'm going to do a revision with some clean aluminum and dremel in the numbers, and experiment with different material colours for around the shifter.

Technically this is, since it's basically covered in a big carbon fibre sticker, lol. But I want a clean look. As close to a gated shifter as I can. Bombed would look good though. When I do my revision I will try and snap some pics of the process for a write up, and you can show me what it looks like :p

Awesome

Like I said if you could take measurements you could do a 3D printed ABS plastic version for $1 or s . Could try all kinds of formats

saw this on YC, looks pretty good (esp for a first go) and like I said, it's nice to see theirs still some original ideas

next step would be a true gated look like a Diablo or an R8

Maybe over the winter I will try and raise the height of the console around the shifter to give myself enough left and right movement for individual gear slots.

As far as the 3D printing goes, I'm not sure if it would be useful for this. I used my school's 3D printer a lot for my job and was less than thrilled with it. There is a lot of post-production work that has to be done that isn't a whole lot of fun, and was more time consuming than anything. I could have machined the simpler designs quicker and cleaner looking than the printer did, however once things got more complicated, the printer was useful.
