ok this has def been done before, but i found a very easy way to do it. i painted in the shift knob where it shows the gears and stuff, like the indent or whatever you call it. easy. paint over it with nail polish, dont worry if it gets on the rest, wipe with dry paper towel, then use nail polish remover but dont get it in the grooves. easy as that. i used bright red. looks great, even such a small detail adds so much to the interior.

oh i had this before. whole thing flat black and red gear grooves,cant tell much in the pic. u gotta get messy with the paint, doesnt matter if u go out the lines. just clean and tada!
