Shifter damage.

I need some advice. My brand new ride has scratches on the shifter. I did it wearing a ring of all things. My SS 2.4 has the 5 speed, plastic, nickel/chrome shifter knob and it is scratched up bad. The car has a whopping 250 miles on it. I did not know I was doing this to my shifter. These things must be fragile. What can I do? Are they replaceable? Are there aftermarket shift knobs out there? Has anyone else experienced this?

Check TWM performance, they have knobs and a short shifter also, and momo etc etc

It only voids the warranty on the parts you replace/modify. In this case it would be the shifter.

or the shift cables or the roll pins that connect the cables to shift mechanisms. All these could be contributed to a short throw shifter.

if anything they can only void the warranty on the shifter itself, and transmission/slave cylinder/synchros etc. if your fuel pump dies they obviously cant void the warranty b/c of an aftermarket shifter... anyways it's HIGHLY unlikely the shifter will cause any problems.

thanks

I have the saavy to install a shifter. I owned a 70 Chevelle SS for 14 years. I prefer OEM parts but are you saying that the TWM is good? The Hurst looks good as does the B&M. The only thing keeping me from ordering one is wondering if there is a difference between the SS/SC app and the SS/NA ....... cant tell from the websites that sell these. I have a SS/NA.

Twm is the shortest throw for the 2.4,a 38% reduction they dont make one for the 2.0 yet,and I think the B&M is for the 2.0 and the hurst aint out yet, also the twm comes with a shift knob

and the B&M dont, cause it does come with a knob too, dont think iv seen a short shifter kit that diddnt come with a knob. but if i had a camera id show you that the b&m also has a problem with scratching. like a rock, if you scrape it you get that white mark, well thast whats goin on with mine . but for the thread starter go to one of our supporting venders sites they should have a section wher you can speicify your car and what parts will fit your car

My cast tore my shifter knob apart! I am just going to order the GM one that matches the silver on the dash - without the number pattern.

I have just installed the Short Throw Shifter and let me tell you it would be the best thing that would ever happen to you since buying the car, the shifting difference is amazing and the fact is you will enjoy and feel your ride a lot more with that shifter.

Now you need to be careful with the Warranty, if you are purchasing the vehicle then don't worry, but if you lease the car, your warranty will be voided on the actual shifter, the box and the arm.

But on a lighter side, it won't matter because speed shops will give you a warranty for the service and maintnance on the shifter arm and shifter itself.

If you do get the TWM (which I suggest) you still need to take your rings off because the shifter **** are covered in a fragile metal they are not scratch resistant, they make them out of aluminum and basic metals.

Let me know if this helped

Well, I have mulled all this over and have a few questions. As for Johny and Beck. I only need the knob but if it is easier, I would consider changing the whole shifter. My initial thought is to tape it up and clear coat the nickel part before installing it, but heck, I could do that to the one I hacked up. The other part is, do you guys have Paypal? I would still like to talk about buying one. The other consideration I have is a short throw installation. I did purchase my car, but am afraid of voiding my warranty. It also appears that the TWM is the only shifter available for the 2.4L. I checked out the TWM website and it looks like you can upgrade the shift knob, but are they fragile too? Sorry about the long post but I need some more education before I hack up my new ride. Thanks dudes. I also added some pics of my car if you want to look at the 2007.

I put the TWM on then I put my stock knob back on bringing it back up to stock height, the service tech who drove my car today did not know the difference

Well, I have thought it over and will deal with it for now. I am afraid to even drive my car after reading all the scary warranty stories. I love having good credit so I guess I will leave my car sit. I am gonna buy a beater for winter driving anyway. After reading all those threads I am afraid to even put a shift knob on. I also got tires for life where I got my car and am sure to mess that up by not getting all my service done there. Wow.

still thinking

I am still thinking of changing a least the shift knob. Mine is horrible. Does anyone know the shaft diameter on the 2.4 5spd?? I found a leather MOMO on eBay but dont know if it will work. Here is the link

Mine Shift KNob Broke after 300 miles

You scratched your's my trim plate just flew off when I shifted into 4th.

Try going to the dealer to see if they sell the trim plates. the only snap into the shift knob with these cheap plastic clips.

I got mine replaced by the dealer it's under warranty.
