Smoothlock cover for trunk
Smoothlock cover for trunk
Is anyone interested in these covers for the trunk. I have them on the door and they look great, now I want one for the trunk. On the website he says that he will make any size in batches of 250. Here is the link to the covers for the door locks http://www.phantomss.com/smoothlock/gallery.shtml. I think these will help the look of the rear of the car more than debadging it, that big chrome lock looks like ass.
I've been considering this as well. The main reason, again, that I've been holding off is because I couldn't get the trunk lock cover as well. What "type" of black do these come in? Are they clear coated/shiny? Or are they just flat black?
In other words... do they match the factory black on our Cobalts without being painted black again?

Its a shiny black like on the site http://www.phantomss.com/smoothlock/gallery.shtml.
Hey guys, I was just alerted to this thread. Thanks for the interest.
Here's the thing...SmoothLocks only cover the FLAT face of the lock, they don't curve. The Cobalt rear lock has a different shape than most GM locks. Adding a SmoothLock to the rear would not be as visually appealing as it would on the other style (more flat) lock on other GM cars. I am an honest guy, and I honestly can't say that making one that fits on the flat-only portion of a rear Cobalt look wouldn't look a touch odd because the sloped ring on the outside edge of the lock would also have to be painted to match. I tried some testing and it just didn't look right when I visualized it. I know this sounds negative and I'd love to earn y'alls business, but I would rather just be honest about it.
So, we do not have any -current- plans to make the trunk lock for the Cobalt for that reason and we need a minimum order of 250 for a custom order.
However, the small versions of SmoothLocks look great on the doors, as you can see in the gallery on SmoothLock.Com. Would you guys like me to run a special sale on pairs of them for your doors?
Regardless, like I said, I really appreciate the interest. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.
In my next post, I will address some of the questions that have been posted.

(don't let the reflection fool you...they are perfectly round, smooth and "dome" shaped with no irregularities or dimples.)

A. Yes, they can be painted to match your car. If you want to paint yours, you need to make sure the paint will stick to the SmoothLock. We suggest using a clear primer such as Klean-Strip Adhesion Promoter or similar product. Once the primer has dried, you can paint the SmoothLocks.
TIP: Once the paint dries, use a very sharp X-Acto knife to trim around the edge of the SmoothLock. This will make it easier to remove it from the backing paper without cracking the paint.

There are a LOT happy people using these out there. What I think I hear most oftne is something like "I cannot believe how something so small can make such a difference."

If anyone else has any questions, just post, PM or e-mail me. Thanks, guys!
Another thought...if you guys think you can get perhaps some Cobalt/Ion dealers interested in helping to meet the minimal order, I would be happy to make them dealers and they could get dealer pricing on all sizes. They are inexpensive but have a healty profit margin.
The more I look at the rear lock, the more I think it would look pretty good, BUT remember the REST of the rear lock that isn't covered will need to be painted (the outer ring that is not flat) to look the best.
