Im pretty sure there was some kind of pink targa top ss, But it was strictly for show. The think cutting the roof off and making a targa would make for an unsafe amount of body flex

My brother and I unfortenately did the same thing to his 99 Mustang. They actually make a kit for his car...we had to restructure the bottom end to handle the flex and it seems to be alright for flex but he really regrets it...lots of work and its still not finished (did it 2 years ago)...

I think it would look great on the balt but it will cause problems....

You could do it as show only and trailer the car around, but the body flex would be rediculous and tweak the car way too much to do it for a car you wanna drive.
here's the pic:

To do it on a more modern uni-body car, You would reeally need to do it on a car that also comes in convertable styles. Like mitsubishi eclipse/spider, Ford mustang, etc. They have a stiffer body by design to allow for convertable models or aftermarket targa.

A cobalt isn't built to not have a solid roof and still be driven.

The roof is too critical to the structure of the car. If you cut the roof off, your car will have the crash sturdiness of aluminum foil.

i woudnt do this, but in theory, couldnt you have a rollcage welded to the frame in order to replace the structural rigidity the roof offered?

Well... Yeah, but then you lose the targa top effect by having those two roll cage bars there.

Sounds like a good idea but after seeing that pink one it looks hideous. The windshield is too big for it.

throw in a bigger roll cage to make up for the loss in stiffness and cut away

Gonna be really difficult with the doors on the Cobalt. They're not like other targa or T-top cars, like supra's and firebirds. The cobalt has the door surround which the glass slides up into. You would have to re-construct the doors so you could shut the door with the window up.
