Thinking about Chroming my Grilles

I was looking around at the parts store while I was at Advance getting my oil filter when I noticed that Duplicolor has a Chrome Spray paint. I bought a can to see what it looks like. I thought I would play around with it and see what it looks like.

I sprayed some on a coke can and it looks very nice. It has a nice chrome look that is not overly shinny. Just like the color of the chrome trim ring around the bowties. I am more of an old school kinda guy that likes chrome instead of black. I was thinking about painting the Upper Radiator, SS Lower Radiator, and the 2 rear ones on my SS/SC. I have an Orange Cobalt. I was wondering what everyone thought of this.

And on a side note, has anyone removed the rear grilles?

OH NO DON"T DO IT! Get the billet grils from Cobalt Addiction if you want chrome grills. That spray paint doesn't look good at all!

I looked at the Cobalt Addiction ones and Liked them, but they seem a little too crowded. If there were a few less bars I think they would look better in my opinion.

Like I said, it was something that I was playing around with. I will probably keep the stock ones on.

Your cars red right? paint em black and paint that bar where the bow tiw is black too. It looks HOTT! In fact I'm debating doing this or getting the billet grills myself.

Just steer clear from that "Chrome"spray paint bud it looks horrible on lage areas.

Just call me old fashioned. I like chrome. I bought chrome projectors. I am looking at buying chrome wheels too. I don't have anything against orange and black. I just like the look of chrome. Like I said, I am old school.

Man I was only kidding! LOL! Hey my car is chrome and body colored too. I'm getting the chrome projectors too and mine came with chrome wheels so I'm fine there.

Seriously the Halloween thing was only a joke.

I painted the inserts on my back bumper with Chrome Paint to give them a different look:

I also installed the billet grilles from Cobalt-Addiction on the front:

Now I do like the look of the grilles that Doc and KindredX have. I will probably get those whenever I have some free time to work on it.

KindredX, how difficuly was it to remove the back inserts?

I say you should give it a try, might look very nice. Just be sure to properly prep the peices, and lay on some clearcoat afterwards. Good luck!

PS - post pics when you're done!

they are made by carriage works....cobalt addiction sells them. The top grill required some cutting, it was a blast....I didn't smooth the edges very well though.
the rear inserts are fairly easy, just be careful not to break the tabs.

Doc said it all, the back inserts are easy to remove, however it can be even easier to loose the clip that holds them in, and I know I lost one of them. The dang thing fell in my driveway and it was forever lost. Oh well...

Hey all, I just bought the upper and lower grills from CW. I installed the upper one a few hours ago, and it looks good but I have one question for those who have completed it.

1.) How did you reattach the Chevy symbol? Unfortuately in the directions they have you remove the part of the grill that used to help hold the chevy symbol in place. With it removed, you can tighten the screws as tight as you want but the chevy symbol is at that point loose and does not fit appropriately.

Me and my friend ended up dremel'ing the piece off that is needed into like a small rectangle that included the 2 screw holes, and then put that back under so give the screws something to tighten onto, but it never mentioned doing this in the directions, and without it I dont see how it could have been put back on without addition equipment or something.

Oh and I have the silver coated one, like the 2 people above, but I must admit it looks way better on my black car then it does on the yellow one above. I think the yellow car shoulda went black. Even the red car shoulda went black.

I had to do the same thing you did to get theChevy symbol to stay on right, should have mentioned that to you. Post some pics of the ride with the grilles, would love to see it.

I was able to take pictures, sorry about the quality, they degraded as I reduced the size using Coral on my gf's PC. GIMP Rules

The pictures below came out weird looking, again probably due to conversion

Looks good on black. By the way, is that your girl in the picture, or just someone walking across the street?? Anyways, she's pretty cute. Good job man. On the car too!

i would not buy the chrome paint cause it sux, but you can have your grills dipped in chrome for a cheap price and it will look good and save you money from buying billet grilles!!! just my $0.02

To be honest, the grill is complete chrome, or aluminum. they painted over the silver with black, so the chrome on the front (or aluminum) wont come off. To be honest there was black tar on top of the silver that i had to scratch off. It was pretty easy to do, and this kinda backs up the theory the black is on top of the silver, not the other way arround. Also build quality is very good. I wish I would have taken pictures up close so I could show/explain it better.

Yea thats my gf, she was mad cause I made her stand in the middle of the road while taking pictures
