Trunk Automation???

Hey ppl, its the plastiqman here, and i was dreamin up of a system to get our trunks to automatically open and close. Now im lookin for some input advice to see if i can get this going... my theory is to have linear actuators with a shock length of 8" and an extended of 12-13" i was trying my best to measure lol. the actuators have limiters on them so fully extended and closed will kill the motor. PROBLEM IS: the force to close the trunk... is their any way one of you might think of this? maybe have the trunk latch be held open then the latch forced shut?? give me some options or help/input.. anything to get me past this brain block. maybe we can get a GP going or something woot!

Maybe permenantly hold the latch open? Then whatever you're using for the open/close (if they have enough strength) could keep the trunk closed? I don't know anything about it, just throwing something at you.

Probably not the best way to go. I would think that if you had the latch open, you would get the "Truck Ajar" text constantly on your display.

I'm not too sure about the actuators you would need. I know the new 4Runners have the rear door that will automatically close the latch if you don't close the door with enough force. Perhaps you could look into something like that.

goto your dealer and look into how the caddies do it... maybe you can buy the parts and make them fit...

i like the auto-open idea, but the additional things to make it close isnt worth it... to auto open tho, maybe just one side could be a stronger shock.... or both..

in all honesty. what i would do is just put some shock type deals in it. so when you popped your trunk...theyd push it ALL the way open.

i mean, youd have to shut it close...but..ya.

thanks for the replies guys.. and the trunk ajar switch can be shorted out so thats not a problem.. just wondering if its going to bang around when hittin a bump or someting.. i dont know but i think the trunk is about 50lbs. I do not know the speed of the actuator but thats something to investigate.

The caddy's i remember had no auto trunk, just where you close it a little and it shuts itsself (or is that a ford thing) ok i will do some reasearch and maybe get some photoshoped pics of this to visualize it. thanks!
