Trunk Shocks/CF Trunk Discussion

Ok my CF trunk still has a little fitment issue where the drivers side does not sit completely flush with the quarter panel. However if I just push down a little bit on the trunk it fits flush but when I let go it goes back to where it was. So I'm thinking its because the trunk shock is too strong. Anyone know if there are weaker replacement shocks I could use?

if there is 2 shocks on the trunk, how about taking 1 off?
i don't have much insight for you, but also check for rubber bumpers that might be in the way of the CF trunk closing

If I take one off I'm afraid of the trunk flexing too much and cracking. Ive thought about it being the rubber piece holding it up but I don't think it could push the trunk up like that and I don't really want to hack those up because that's what keeps the water out of the trunk

it won't crack as long as you're careful shutting it. you can take off the gas shock itself. just leave on the metal bracket. the bracket is what gives the trunk its stability, the shock is just there to help you(the user) open and close it

Hmm ok Ill have to try it then. Do you know if I can reinstall the shock if I decide to put it back on?

if you can take it off without destroying it i took a look at it, i don't think its possible. but the whole latch/shock assembly can't be more than $20-$30

first picture is just an obvious one of the hinge and shock. in the second one. you see that little "bar" that goes from the hinge to the shcok at the top. you can cut through that. and then in the third one, you can see how the end is really big, all that is the the swivle/hinge part of the shock, you can take a dremel to that just like at the top and it'll come off

I think the top and bottom have a metal clip holding the shock on. Might try prying them out before hacking em up. Also the rubber bumpers that TINY was refering to are little round pieces of rubber, not the actual trunk seal. I'm in afghanistan right now so I cant look for myself, but check those bumpers out.

Yea that shock should be pretty easily removeable. If you needed new ones they aren't going to replace the entire metal hinge assembly. Like YelloEye said it should have some metal clips that hold it one. Probably the same as a cap for a pick-up truck with the rear glass that has the shocks to hold it up.

The LS base model without the spoiler has slightly weaker trunk struts.

carbon fiber trunks take awhile to get them to fight correctly. This is my advice to anyone with a carbon fiber trunk. For the install, washers, new trunk struts and black silicone adhesive are a must and so is time. Use the washers as spacers to raise one side up and pull another side down. The trunk struts from a non spoiler model are also a must, they will make trunk fitment world easier since there is a much less profound push on the trunk after its been closed. I would also recommend using black silicone around the lights as well to prevent leaking which was a probllem with mine. I would also run a thin bead around the edges of your trunk once you are happy with the fitment, this will help with vibrations and movement. It took me about 6 hours to get my trunk to sit perfect, but it was time well spent.

I've got a shaved CF trunk.. took a while to get it to sit flush all around. I shimmed the latch up with washers so when i close it, it holds the trunk down further.. also if you loosen the bolts of the shock strut bracket on the car you can lower it a few mm's which might help.. like someone said also I think base model trunk sturts are weaker than SS ones due to the spoiler not sure how much that will help tho

Can you explain what you mean by shimmed the latch up with washers? Can you take pics sometime? And I have moved the bracket down Also I dremeled the holes where the bolts go in hoping the bolts would sit lower and subsequently dropping the trunk a bit. It worked a little but not completely.

Were you able to reinstall it after that or did it break?

on the two(i thin kits two) bolts/screws holding the latch mechanism to the trunk I put a few washers between the latch and the trunk it slef then tightened the bolts.. so it holds the latch a few mm higher and in effect the trunk a little lower when its closed
