Turn Signals in Rear Lip! (VIDEO!!)
YouTube - Cobalt SS - LED rear turn signal testing - Oznium.com
April 20:
Amber turn signals in the rear lip project is underway! This should only take a couple hours.
I've got 4 of these, 2 for the right side here:
So that's 32 amberish-orange superflux LED's per side. Given my entire 3rd brake light is 30 red superfluxes and looks like so, this might actually work:
Wiring LED's is the one and only thing I know how to do in these cars, so that part won't be a problem. Three concerns at this point. Firstly, off-axis visibility since the grilles in the rear lip are recessed. Second, and most important - for these LED's, amber gives the lowest light output of all the colors... my biggest worry is direct sunlight, especially near sunset/sunrise. And lastly, these things aren't real pretty as you can see in the pic.... they might look pretty ugly just sitting on the grille. But that can be dealt with fairly easily, I figure. I really won't know till it's done.
Solution would be to put these things through a set of relays, then I could change turn signal functionality from these lights to the regular brake light setup with the flip of a switch. This is a worst case scenario, because my brake lights aren't something I want going through 2 sets of relays that could possibly fail. I was thinking of bailing on this project all together, but the LED's were close to $100 and I'd have no other use in the car for amber LED's... so I've got to at least try it out.
Feb 8:
Alright, still in the planning stage, but I've wanted to do this for a while. Mock up of how big the LED modules are:
The lights: SuperFlux LED Dome Light
The lights I'm using are ruthlessly bright... here's ONE of them, and I'll have 4:
Now since they're so bright I'll have some flexibility, I should be able to just stick them behind the grille because on the outside they might actually be TOO bright. I'll run the turn signal wires from the front, then connect my tails to the 3rd brake light. Full pics and vids when it's all done!
Thoughts?

I could. Only reason I'm thinking about behind at the moment is because they'd be invisible that way. The lenses are clear, (I already have a blue one) but I won't know till I get them if they look ugly on the outside of the grille.

It's actually a domelight... just a board with 16 superflux LED's - SuperFlux LED Dome Light
It's easier/cheaper to buy it as a domelight and it'll be easier to waterproof.

No doubt this would work for reverse lights, since the rear lip is way down low it'd light the ground up great. But at the same time, that's my concern only concern for turn signals... they might be too down low and a bit recessed to be properly visible, or get covered in snow since they are so low. I'll have to see how it works out.
I'm looking at one of my IPCW inner tails right now (easily the brightest Cobalt taillights) and it has 10 of these superflux LED's, and I just bought 32 per side as turn signals.

lol whats with the music? haha
I probably wouldnt have cut the mesh like that, I would have stuck the lights behind the mesh, but to each his own, and those are some bright lights

I don't think the mesh is actually cut...just looks like pieces of paper representing the size of the modules.
