Window Tinting
With summer right around the corner I really want to get my windows tinted. In WI it's 50% up front 35% for the back. I want it professionally done and I have called 5 or 6 shops in my area and have been quoted anywhere from $275 to $300 for my coupe. Does this seem high or is that the actual going rate? Also they say they need the car for the entire day, is that pretty standard?

the price sounds about right. holding it all day doesn't sound right to me. the guy who did the tint for me even let me hang around and watch (although he seemed a bit reluctant) it took him MAYBE two hours total.

All depends on the area, some places people get prices around $150, other areas its $220 or more. There really isn't any rhyme or reason other then how much the tinter thinks his time is worth.

For a whole car, I ended up leaving mine most of the day too. Schedule early in the day and you'll have it back by the afternoon.
And yea, that's fairly close to what I paid, a little higher maybe. Does that include a windshield strip? It should, for the price.

What are the different tint percentages
Is it possible to get 45% tint? I know the standard is 50,35,20,5. I really want to stay as close to legal as possible. The reason for my madness is this. A friend of mine did 35% all around and he was always getting pulled over for his tint being to dark. Cops are just stright up dicks around here. Trust me, I would love to go darker.

I'm looking to stay legal too, but in michigan its 35 up front and i think unlimited in the back which means i'd probably just get about 20 in the back and 35 up front.

remember the windows are slightly tinted from the factory, so if you're looking to stay strictly legal, you must calculate the net visible light transmission. for example, if the side windows transmit 70% light, then to stay legal, you can only use 50% tint so the total is 35%. if you put 35% tint on, then the total would be something like 22%, which is too dark. look at the little black writing in the corner of each window for how much tint the windows have stock. the back window is slightly darker i think.

so i'm technically driving around with illegal tint, but personally, i think it's not dark enough. i sometimes wish i had done 20%, but again, i don't want the hassle.
