Talking 4 Racers Test Cobalt SS/SC

I had a few of my buddies from my sports-car-club drive my 2006 Cobalt SS/SC at the Tri-Cities Nationals autocross competition on October 11, 2008. I just got new Stoptech rotors and stainless-steel brake lines on my car about a month ago, so this was my first race with the new brakes. I also had switched tires from the stock Pirelli's to Toyo Proxes 4 tires.

In my first lap, I tried to find the limit of the car with the new brakes and tires. On my second lap, I went back to being smooth. On my third lap, I was doing good except for 1 corner that I botched by entering with too much speed.

I had 3 other drivers in the club run my car so I could learn where I was making my mistakes. One driver is about as skilled as me, and the other 2 are way better than me. The last 2 drivers have competed at the national level and done very well. The final driver is the current national champion in Solo 1 time-trials (Mitch Lewis). He had never driven a Cobalt before this race, but he obliterated my times on his first lap.

I had Gtech Pro RR data logging for the whole race, and I have learned a bunch from that too. Here is the link to the video.

Enjoy

Yea, the other 3 drivers are much better than me. I have a lot to learn, but there are some great teachers in the Sand and Sage Sports Car Club. I love hangin out with them because they are great people (and drivers).

I hope you all enjoyed the video.

They all loved it. In fact, a few people in our club are thinking about buying one now. The only negative comments that they had about it were that it needs a limited-slip-differential, better tires, and stiffer suspension in the rear. Other comments were that the power was amazing, and the Stoptech brakes with HP+ pads were unbelievably responsive.

When I told them that the 2008 and 2009 Cobalts have way more power than my stock SS/SC, they could hardly contain themselves. They were already impressed with my 211 hp at the wheels.

To answer the question about tires, they said to buy Bridgestone RE01 tires (I think that is the name). ...at least for tires that you can drive on the street too.

I have heard that the turbo Cobalt is doing very well on the national level. You have the right car to be successful. Good luck!

thx man, i hope to do alot of sliding around in the snow this winter learning the cars slip points so i can push it hard on the auto-x course in the summer, it's always good to know how your car spins out and slips out, best way to do that in FWD/AWD/RWD is an empty parking lot covered with snow.

i was only able to auto-x once this year with my last car, i was instantly hooked and ordered the cobalt a few weeks later. I have lots to learn on the auto-x course, i've been trying to teach myself heel-toe in the cobalt, my last car just wasn't setup for it on the pedals.

Sounds like a lot of fun!

Not to mention they have stability control, and a bundle of other features, and MONSTER brakes by comparison.

It is good to know that true car-guys (and girls) like the car videos without music. (note to self)

Was the song by Pink the horrible part, or did you dislike all 3 songs?

If you excuse the wind-noise, this video does seem a little better without the music. After many requests, here it is without the music:
