Brake pad experience on a road track anyone?

I love going to my local track but as I'm increasing power and hunting for better lap times, I've noticed that my street brake pads don't cut it anymore.
Who has experience with race pads on the track? Right now I'm running R1Concept rotors and Hawk HPS pads all around. i was thinking of switching to DTC60s or 70s just for the track days. Also, could I get away with just switching the fronts or not?

HPS isn't a track pad, at all. The stock Brembo (Ferodo HP1000) are better. I run Cobalt Friction XR1, but most people can probably do just fine on the stock Brembo pads.

If it were me, I'd ditch the slotted rotors. I know some people think they're great, but every track day I've done so far, I've run OEM-style vented blank rotors and I've never had a problem. HPS isn't a good track pad. I ran with them one time and it was basically a waste of a track day. WAY too much pad fade. There are lots of pad upgrades available for the SC's. If you really must stick with Hawk, go to at least the HP+, but overall I'd look at getting something else entirely.

You can always give Carbotech a call as they are the supplier for Cobalt that won the SCCA T3 National Championship. They have a wide selection of street to full out race pads. Nice part of their pads is they are ceramic and not carbon based so the dust doesn't kill your rims.

Drilled is BAD NEWS. Seen several Vettes catch their brakes on fire. I've yet to see a car survive a full track day with anything drilled. Slotted are "OK" but most people will see more significant pad wear with them. If you have to get anything "fancy," go with dimpled. I wouldn't do anything EBC, honestly not a HUGE Hawk fan either.

Thanks for all the input. This was my first track day with the HPS pads and yes, they are clearly inferior to the stock Brembo ones. There are no Cobalts in the Colorado racing scene that I know of so I'm just looking for some first hand experiences so I don't pay for my own learning curve

I'll take Cobalt XR1 over any Carbotech pad I've personally tried. I've run up to the XP12. The only reason I would even consider them is because I can get a big price break on them.

So for an LSJ would you recommend upgrading to Brembos with stock pads or just getting some race pads for th LSJ calipers?

For what goal? Daily driver? Brembos, but then again, you don't really NEED Brembos for a daily driver. On track, nothing really beats going to race pads. You won't out power a proper set of race pads on track. You might find that the rotors don't behave well on the street though, if you use one that leaves uneven deposits.

For most, I think the convenience of Brembos plus stock Ferodo pads is sufficient for track work. Personally, I think it's more efficient (read: cheaper) to just get race pads on dedicated rotors.

If you're making a bunch more power than stock, well, get the Brembos.

I have a street LSJ with occasional track days. I've never had a problem with OEM replacement rotors with more aggressive pads.

Keep in mind, the more aggressive the pad material the more heat you'll need to get them working better. So if it's a street car, it's not going to brake well cold, which isn't such a great situation for a daily driver.

IIRC, you can get Ferodo pads for the stock LSJ calipers. It took a while, but someone finally sent a set of stockers in for them to use.

No one that goes to the track should use EBC.

No I am at 265hp at the wheels.
Currently I have two sets of rotors for the car. But I could get a good deal on the front set of brembo so I thought I would ask. I am looking for something to run at track days. I have seen the hawk race pads (dtc70, dtc60, or blue 9012).

I was on Cobalt friction wesite but I didnt find part numbers there so I'm not sure what the parts numbers for my car are.
I guess I will have to call there number and ask what the options are. What kind of price is everyone getting on a full set of front race/track pads?

thanks for the help.

PMing you a contact for CF pads. They're pricey, but worth it. Alternatively, if you want to run on the cheap, you could go with Carbotech endurance pads. Not quite as nice of a pad in terms of modulation, but it's a very economical choice for track days.

PMed. I don't have the PN, but you can look them up at either CF or CT sites. Both make TC front pads. I suggest going budget for the rears, like Hawk HPS.
