Cobalt Autocross/Road Racing Video/Picture thread

I don't know if there will be any interest or not but I thought it neat to have a thread where everyone could share their Cobalt autocross and road racing media in one spot. I know I am always looking for quality videos of other Cobalts laying down some rubber and am always interested in seeing what our cars may be capable of. I also think it would be interesting to post at least the car trim level, maybe what kind of FI if any, and what kind of tires you are running in the video. If you think this is a decent idea support this thread by uploading your most recent racing media.

jdbaugh1 08-08-2016 04:46 PM

I'll start it off with a video from a local autocross meet in Salina, KS yesterday.

2006 Cobalt LS - TVS 1320 - Michelin Pilot Super Sport 245/40R17 tires

Yes I am running all stock drivetrain except for clutch.

yellowsupercharged06 08-09-2016 04:02 PM

hows that TVS treating your one wheel lol ?

You don't have to have an LSD to get power to both wheels, it just allows more power to be transmitted to the wheel with traction if the other one is spinning. With FWD there is only so much power you can transmit to the one tire with good contact in hard corner without inducing understeer. However, it does require a little more throttle control out of a corner to put power down without spinning the inside tire.

I'm not saying and LSD isn't advantageous. But, the only time an LSD makes a difference is if one of the tires has lost grip. Otherwise it functions the same as an open differential.

HHRFrenchy 08-10-2016 01:33 AM

I drove my car back to back with a non LSD car, both GMS1 LNF, and can honestly say it makes a MASSIVE difference. Any time I went near the throttle mid corner without lighting the inside tire in the non LSD car. Not saying you can't still put down fast times without one, but it makes it far easier with one.

Back on subject though, I'll throw a couple of my Autox vids in here when I get home next week.

I'm not saying it won't make a difference but saying open differential is one wheel drive is not accurate. I just don't go near the throttle much until I have straightened out. It's definitely something I am considering installing eventually. For the cost and the trouble though it can wait for now.

Thanks HHRFRENCHY, I'll look forward to seeing your videos on here.

yellowsupercharged06 08-10-2016 09:27 AM

i have an open diff on my TVS lsj on E85 and i can tell you from experience that it needs an lsd. If your not feeling it then you need to corner harder. The slightest weight transfer you will feel the one wheel disappear.

but you will have a cheaper time installing it on an f23. im sure its worth its weight in gold.

HHRFrenchy 08-11-2016 01:31 AM

I was even spinning the inside tire on my stock 2.2 5spd HHR. I can't imagine the one wheel peel throwing down that much power...

jdbaugh1 08-11-2016 08:18 AM

I'm not putting full power down mid-corner. It's not like I'm saying my inside tire doesn't spin. I have to be real easy with the throttle unless I am fairly level. If I hammer down right out of a corner I'll spin every time.

The point I was trying to make is an open differential is not constantly one wheel with power. It only comes into play when one tire loses grip. Which in Autox is quite frequently. I just compensate with the throttle in situations where I know I can't get much power down. Not saying it's as fast as an LSD car but it's not like it's completely useless without it either.

Do any of you know what percentage slip the F23 quaife LSD allows?

yellowsupercharged06 08-11-2016 09:16 AM

no idea on the slip % but there are other options out there besides the quaife, team green i think it is or something like that seems to be a go to option.

Is that team green unit just the spring loaded insert shown here . If so that doesn't look like a the kind of solution I would be looking for. It's just a friction plate between the outer two drive gears which will wear. If I'm going to tear into the transmission I want to do it right the first time.

colodude18 08-11-2016 10:35 AM

Great idea JDBaugh1 !
Here's a backward looking vid where I managed to keep an MP4-12C behind me for a lap. Car mods are in my signature. I was running Nitto NT01's in the stock size.

McLaren chase - YouTube

That's impressive man. I would be so frustrated if I was driving the McLaren lol. Did you use youtube's video stabilization or something for that vid?

Yes I believe that youtube prompted me to do the stabilization. I'm a little fuzzy since this was over 3 years ago :)

Well, apparently I'm retarded, and don't know how to imbed the video, so are the links.

Cold tires suck...

Mods in sig.

This is at Watkins Glen a few years ago. 2009 SS turbocharged, Sumitomo HTR Z II tires, Powell hardcore rear bar, custom CAI, Hahn catless DP, stock tune.

I didn't make it easy for that E36 after passing me.

SilverSonic 09-26-2016 05:22 PM

Had to rype something ckaise my phone posted a post to the wrong thread. Nice rides though.

jdbaugh1 10-09-2016 11:45 PM

Nailed a cone head on and got a little sideways. Did manage to get a couple clean runs in with my fastest shown at the end. Was trying to capture tire roll but my gopro wasn't setup right and it turned out pretty dark. Ended up with a pretty big chunk cut into my tire today.

My most recent event, Enduro Lite. 1 practice lap, followed by 2 flying laps. Finally beat one of the Drivers of a MK6 Golf R. Might have beaten both, but I broke a shift cable somewhere along the way, and couldn't complete my second run.

since there are some video of the NCM track here I thought some people might like to see the first time a Cobalt SS Turbo ran the track. Not quite what you might think.

What is the orange tape for?

Foximus 03-01-2017 03:50 PM

Closing off the grill. I need to teach the boys to do it neater, hahaha.

Basically the more closed off the front of the car is, the more downforce you are making. With Trevor's Cooling package on the car, we can completely close off the upper grill (The top of it is already an aluminum plate) and depending on air temps, we can close off more and more of the bottom. Car still runs cool, and like i said we get a little more downforce out of it. Same reason the NASCAR guys do it. We have seen gains of up to a half second at the larger high speed tracks just by doing this.

Wow I did not know that. It's crazy to think a little tape on the grill can increase downforce. Do you know if it has more do do with total airflow volume or the actual overall surface area of the inlet? Like say hypothetically you have the same inlet area up front but you add an extractor hood so you are getting more volume through the same inlet area than before. Do you have less downforce with the extractor hood than without given the front inlet area is the same? Or is it about minimizing inlet area while trying to flow as much air through that area as possible?

Sorry if my question isn't clear I'm just intrigued.

Foximus 03-01-2017 11:05 PM

At some point we plan to tuft the car with yarn and see the air patterns. I know with my rad fans on, you can feel it pull air out the extractor in the hood. The placement of the fender vents is done going off the principals everyone is following to evacuate air from under the car. The idea is if the cooling system can handle having more of it blocked off, the more flat area that forces air around (rather than letting it in) helps make more front downforce.

When I was still in NASCAR we used to make duct pans in front of the wheels to pull air from for the tires and brakes, rather than cutting holes in the nose, and that is kinda what i am following.

Hope that makes sense, im stupid tired right now, lol.

ricklovin93 03-26-2017 01:23 PM

A little off topic, any of you guys use a tow dolly to get your cars to the track? Should i Just save up for a trailer, or will I be fine with a tow dolly?

jdbaugh1 04-10-2017 11:24 PM

Used track addict free app on android combined with race render (not-free) software to create data overlay for a short autocross run.
