All Five Cars Finish in Grand-Am Cup Series Opener at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. , Jan. 27 2006 – Team Cobalt put five of their Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged on the 88-car starting grid for the season-opening Grand-Am Cup Series road race at Daytona International Speedway, and saw all five take the checkered flag.
“The performance of all five Cobalt SS Supercharged cars this weekend, from three independent teams, gives us reason to be proud,” said Ken Wasmer, small car program engineering manager for the GM Performance Division, which provides engineering technical support for the Cobalt entrants.
“Last year, in our first race with the Cobalt SS, our best finish was a seventh place,” said Wasmer. “Today we finished fourth, eighth, 12th, 13th and 24th. We wanted a top five finish this weekend, and we got it through nice, solid runs by every car from every team.”
“We set our sights much higher this year. We want to win the Manufacturer’s Championship, and this is a good start because we proved we can run with the best cars from every other manufacturer out there.” Wasmer added.
The Street Tuner class finish of 200-mile race on Daytona’s 3.56-mile combination infield road course and high-banked oval layout saw new teammates Jamie Holtom and Eric Curran place fourth in their Georgian Bay Motorsports entry.
Curran, who joined the Cobalt team after many years racing Honda and Acura cars, noted, “The Cobalt settled in quickly and was very easy to drive. The engine makes good power and the handling was very solid and predictable in the infield portions of Daytona.
Curran and Jamie Holtom were followed in eighth by Jamie’s father, Jim Holtom, and his new co-driver, Daniel Colembie in the second Georgian Bay car.
Newcomer Phil Malgren and veteran Ed Magner drove their Powell Motorsports-built Cobalt SS Supercharged to a 12th place finish, one spot ahead of Bo Roach and Tom Lepper in their Team Cobalt California entry. Lepper’s son, Jeff, finished 24th in the team’s second car, which he shared with V. J. Mirzayan.
The Chevrolet Cobalt hit dealer showrooms in January 2005 and is factory-built in Lordstown, Ohio. Engineered by GM Performance Division, the Cobalt SS Supercharged is the most powerful and agile of the model line, with a suspension developed on Germany’s famed Nurburgring race track and a 2.0-liter ECOTEC Supercharged engine named among the industry’s 10-Best Engines for 2006 by the editors of Ward’s Communications.
GM Performance Division delivers compelling, low volume, high-performance production and specialty vehicles, and the Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged was developed by the Division’s engineers. Others include the 400 hp CTS-V, 469 hp STS-V and 443 hp XLR-V from the Cadillac V-Series; the 400hp Chevy SSR and the 395 hp Chevy Trailblazer SS; and the 205 hp Saturn ION Red Line.
