have you found your local scca club and do they have a website? the dates and locations of the autocrosses should be listed on the local website, and just show up and ask someone who's working around the trailer for some assistance and theyll steer you in the right direction. not much prep for your first time, remove all items from car like floor mats spare tire and jack etc... , bring plenty to drink, and if you like some snacks as well and a air compressor or airtank if you have one(if not im sure someone will let you borrow theirs). wear tennis shoes as no flip flops are allowed some sunscreen and enough cash to pay entry into the event. and be prepared to have a new obsession

look around on google and find the website to your local club.

you can find all the rules you will need at the scca website under the solo section.

you will be in the H-Stock class, around here its pretty competitive but there are enough new people in it that you have a shot at finishing with a respectable position.

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to mess with air pressure, just set it around 35# in all the tires before you leave and you should be fine. you aren't going to be competitive the first few times, and you will drop more time by learning how to drive the car and course than tuning the car.

When you get there spend all your free time getting rides from people. I found the best way to do this is stand where all the cars line up, just before the start with a helmet in your hand and polish up your hitchin a ride thumb! a lot of people are willing to give rides. and if you get to ride with other people before you race, invite everyone to ride along with you, and go out of your way to ask the really good people (in the X class) to ride with you and give you advice. I didn't want any at first, I thought it would be fun to teach myself the basics and then get someone to help me out, WRONG. and its more fun with someone else too.

all you need is a snell 95 or newer helmet. if you don't have one check craigs list for one, push come to shove they usually rent helmets at the event. but its $10 and a pain to do. no sandals, wear your seatbelt.

the rules say something to the effect of if its not bolted down, you can take it out. if it is bolted down it has to stay. what do you have done to the interior? I doubt you have anything that would keep you out of stock class. unless you have gutted the interior, or have a race seat (that, i'm not totally sure what the rules are on) you will be ok.

the only people that enforce class rules are the other competitors. if you are in the wrong class your first time, no one will say a thing. My little brother drove a truck in a sedan class, no one said a word about it.

Tires will be a big plus for you, get a good set. Leave the rear seat as it doesn't weigh enough to justify the hassel of removing and re-installing it.

http://www.rmsolo.org

Take a look there, click on the "RMSolo Autocross School Introduction" that should help you out.

you will hate your tires after the first race, but I would recommend you keep them for a while. First you want to make sure its something you like, you WILL like it, but make sure you like it first. also its not really a bad idea to learn on cheap tires. You won't be tearing up expensive tires, and it will teach you a lot more about driving. But don't plan to be competitive no matter how well you drive, just because the tires are so bad.
