Wheel Questions

I have newly acquired a low mile '09 SS and am looking for a set of wheels to buy to use for track days and Solo events.

Are stock wheels from an '06 SS a fine choice , as long as price is reasonable ,or is there a big weight difference in the wheels ........lighter being better ?

I am also open to tire choice, and wear is not an issue ....but stick is !
I think the Contis on it now are stock.

I am looking forward to some fun this summer , so any other advise would be appreciated.

Cheers!
Al

It depends on what class you want to run in (for autocross anyway, I can't speak for road racing). You might want to do some research.

I would avoid SC wheels though.

The SC wheels will need to be ran with a spacer to clear the Brembos, and possibly longer studs.

I would recommend just finding a better (and probably lighter) set of wheels that fit to begin with.

As mentioned, what class you will run in for AutoX will decide if you can run wider wheels. For track days, it won't matter.

I run 18x8 PF01s with a Conti race slick for track days.

Yeah. Figure out what class your in before buying wheels. Would suck to find out your bumped to a much heavier class just because your wheels and tires are too wide, and now your at a disadvantage.

If you want sticky "street" tires, I highly recommend Hankook Rs3v2's. Don't go competition slicks till you have at least felt the car out and know what you want to do more of (autox or track days)

Yes, I don't suppose spacers are a good start, so I'll need to find the proper offset.

I love the Team Dynamics 17x9's I got from Team Illuminata. Custom offset, hub bore and bolt pattern to our odd 5x110. Average weight but wayyy stronger than some of the ultra lightweight wheels out there - which is what you want if you plan on jumping curbing at a road course. They come out to around 1000 shipped but they do take 4-6 weeks since they are made to order in the UK and shipped by boat + customs.

Of course a 17x9 is only going to be legal in STX, DSP or SMF... I'm in STX and I think its the only "tuner" class that we have a chance at. I've ran the Direzza ZI and will have my 2013 prod. BFG Rivals will be here on Weds. People around here tend to poo-poo the rival, but our endurance race car (e30) has over 40 race hours, 2 autocrosses (with 4 drivers) and 3 track days (running 2 back-to-back sessions) and are just now on the wear bars. Its an incredible tire and I just got my 245/40/17s for 132/ea on tire rack + $70 MIR.
