Ontario Tint Percentage..
Ontario Tint Percentage..
Hey everybody I curious about what % of tint everybody is using on their cars. Right now I'm thinking of either putting on 15% or 20%. Just curious if anybody that has either of these percentages has been pulled over in Ontario. I think the lowest legal percentage is like 30 % or something like that.
According to the main tint installer in our region (who shall remain nameless) its legal to have 20% on the rear and side windows with the driver window being 35%, however, the majority of officers personal vehicles that he has done have been 20% all around. I intend to go 20% all around.
Different jurisdictions throughout the province enforce this law differently
In Niagara, its up to the officers discretion.
Its hard to say what % would be legal and what wouldn't be because of several factors
-Time of day
-Weather (sun, clouds, rain)
-Colour of interior
-Presence of a sunroof
-Size of windows...etc
My best advice is if you get stopped, roll down your windows and if its night time, turn on the dome light
Colour coating obscuring interior
(3) No person shall drive on a highway a motor vehicle on which the surface of the windshield or of any window to the direct left or right of the driver’s seat has been coated with any coloured spray or other coloured or reflective material that substantially obscures the interior of the motor vehicle when viewed from outside the motor vehicle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 73 (3).

I had 15% all the way around on my Talon in Ottawa for almost 6 years and never had a problem with cops. (well, in regards to window tint
) But, I will never get that dark again. I had to roll down my windows on occasion to make left turns safely, and I never felt comfortable reversing at night.
I'm sitting at 17% all around and as was stated the law SEEMS to state that the front windows can't be so dark as to obstruct the view of the driver. If what Eddie said is true I'm up **** creek
. I wouldn't go any darker than I am right now I've gotten a few dirty looks from cops at night and as Canuck said it can be difficult to see especially in a poorly lit area.

Would I go this dark again, assuming I have no problems maybe but it's just somethin to be aware of when you starting getting to the lower percentages.
