2011: Race City's last year

Well, as many locals may know, this will be hte final year that Race City is operation, after which the only Quarter mile tracks remaining in Alberta will be either Medicine Hat Dragstrip, or Castrol Raceway.

That is, of course, unless Nensi gets off his heine, and does something about it (I for one am not holding my breath)...

Apparently Secret Streets are starting (weather permitting of course) on April 29th...

RaceCity - Home
RaceCity - SECRET STREET

If the rules/fees/gates are the same as last year;
  • Gates open @ 6pm
  • Tech inspection starts @ 7pm
  • Racing starts @ 7:30pm
  • Last passes @ 11:30pm (weather/track permitting)
  • Racing costs: $25
  • No helmet required for cars running 14.0 or slower (I do not have required helmets specs for cars running faster than 14.0 at this time)
  • must wear shoes (no sandals), pants(no shorts), and long sleeve shirt (they seem to have relaxed on the shirt part - but it wouldn't hurt to bring one just incase)
  • Spectators cost: $5

Does anyone plan on bringing out their cars to Secret Street (or any CRDA events) this year??

Maybe we can arrange for a bunch of us to meet up one night??

I gotta get my garage (overhead) door fixed, then weld up the GA's exhaust...
So really, there's nothing new over here.

is a 2.8/60's SC car capable of below 14.0 at this elevation?

(This would be the first time I've been to a track so I doubt I'll get any good times. Thus the capable part haha).

What else do you need to bring? Just your car and yourself? I really want to go and so does my friend Matt (ssCanada).

helmet is a must for under 13.99 and faster. but a helmet should be worn anyways just common sense. also regular clothes, no sandals, shorts or sleeveless shirts.

you will have a tough time making 14 with those mods, i have trouble trying to break 14 right now due to no traction in 2nd and part of 3rd. I will be there any weekend i can make it. I have to get the knock out of my enigne though, it knocking at top of 3rd and trying to figure out why

May not be there that night, but I will be there at some point. I want a few base runs as the car is with the GMS1, and go from there.

Been a long time since I've been down that bitch. Way too long.

I have a personal best of 14.1@99mph with my old GTP, and a 13.9@102mph in my NSRT-4. I damn well expect this car to do better the way it sits.

this year is the last year on the lease extension that was given a few years back. everyone is still fighting to keep it open but the city still has their heads up their asses and figure they need the land for whatever fictional project they can come up with this time.

I think it was just that the lease was coming to an end this year or something like that. there was a petition on the race city website about keeping it open

I tried puttign any info you would ned in hte first post;
BlueCobalt would have a much better idea of what SC's can pull.

the first point i already listed, the clothing I forgot - but added (good call!)

I personally feel a helmet is absurd;
it's annoying and kinda ghey to have to wear a helmet when you're driving a 15+ second car... I prefer to drive w/o a helmet when I can (and according to both NHRA & AHRA rules, no helmets are required for cars running 14.000 and slower.

Actually, the original lease was good through something like 2015 (probably longer though);
The city for several years has been screwing with the operator to try to get them out of the lease so that they can make a settling pond on that land;
What went down last spring was the city council agreed to allow the operator to use the facility through to the end of summer 2011;
Council still has the power to uphold the original lease agreement, but I see nothing to indicate Nensei will, or even cares to - he is not a motorsport fan, and I suspect that most of council, along with Nensi will only know how much Calgary needs a venue like Race City when the first kid dies from street racing after the track is closed... and you had better believe it will happen.

The current operator has been seeking possible new locations for a facility, but when ever a location is found, then the problem of zoning comes into play;
iirc the most likely/suitable location is adjacent to a plot that the owner has been trying to get zoned for a golf course for the last ten years;
the term I kept hearing was "not in my backyard" - essentially to get re-zoned the local municipality has to go to it's constituents, most of which understand that it would be a good idea, but don't want one next to them...
If the most suitable plot has the adjacent plot's owner trying to (unsuccesfully I might add) re-zone for a golf course for the last ten years, what do you think the odds are of getting zoned for a motorsport facility?
-> I'll tell you, virtually zero.

I do not plan on racing on April 29th;
I might go watch though.
At the beginning and end of the year (as far as secret street is concerned) the track surface is generally quite cold, and 60' times suffer... so I generally opt to save my money...

I saw a mean '00 WS6 Firebird Formula on the side of deerfoot last night... the kid just did an engine swap, and figured it was something like 525hp... I'd wager I'll see him @ RC this year...
I have high hopes for a good year @ RC this year...

last year Kissrocker & CalgaryBalt had a lot of fun duking it out;
unfortunately Kissrocker was in a rear ender eccident, and he's now rolling in a (base) late model Cavalier...

the two were pretty competitive and did improve their e/t's;

Kissrocker had an ('06) SS/2.4-auto like your's, and CalgaryBalt has an '08 LT(2)-5spd, with bolt on's...

I'll be mostly bringing out my late model Grand Am this year...

If you bring your cobalt out sometime I want to race you soundjunky, I'm yet to see an LNF go in person.

How exactly does the track work? You just find who you want to race and get in line?
