Coolant...have you ever had to

Hey folks.
I thought I would throw this question out to the Canadian contingent. How often do you if ever need to top up your coolant. I have to top it up every once in a while. The amount is very little over a few months (maybe a half a cup)

cheers

Your coolant is a closed system, unless there is a leak, you shouldn't have to top up at all.

If you go and get your oil changed at a shop of any kind, they top off all your fluids including you coolant. my car has less that 16000 miles and i just topped off my coolant. I sell cars at a chevy store and my service department said that it is normal to have to add coolant.

3 months or so. I checked the engine in the usual places. Don't see any condensation in oil. May have a pin hole somewhere.

It is going in for some warranty work I'll have them check it. I thought it may be from evaporation cause the amount is so little probably less than a half cup maybe a quarter cup.

cheers

if your really worried about the coolant level, just add a little bit but no more then where the full line is and if its too much for the system it will just get rid of it through the overfill tubes. good ol' fail safes.

I actually added to both the inter cooler and the rad reservoir. I have been around and working on cars pretty much most of my life and do realize that yes it will go down especially if you are driving in abnormal traffic (ie: stop and go). I was just curious if anyone else has had to top theirs up once in a blue moon. The amount I put in tonight was very little.

Thanks Otta and Spaz. I do realize they are separate entities. I put about a shot in the inter cooler and about a quarter cup in the rad overflow. I probably did not have to but I like to keep things topped up. You have to remember that Dex is 70 glycol and it will evaporate.

Again thanks for all of your input. It was much appreciated.

Keep it coming as I would still like folks to chime in.

Here is the MSDS for Dex-cool antifrees

Skin Contact:
May cause slight irritation of the skin. If irritation occurs, a temporary
burning sensation and minor redness and/or swelling may result. Other adverse
effects not expected from brief skin contact.

Ingestion:
This material may be harmful or fatal if swallowed. Ingestion may result in
vomiting; aspiration (breathing) of vomitus into lungs must be avoided as even
small quantities may result in aspiration pneumonitis. Contains ethylene
glycol and/or diethylene glycol which are toxic when swallowed. A lethal dose
for an adult is 1 ml per kilogram or about 4 ounces (1/2 cup). Severe kidney
damage can occur as a result of ingestion. May cause Central Nervous System
(CNS) depression.

This material and/or components may cause the following effects:
Developmental Toxicity, Reproductive Toxicity

Primary Target Organs:
The following organs and/or organ systems may be damaged by overexposure to
this material and/or its components.

Kidney, Liver

Signs and Symptoms:
Irritation as noted above. Aspiration pneumonitis may be evidenced by
coughing, labored breathing and cyanosis (bluish skin); in severe cases death
may occur. Early to moderate CNS depression may be evidenced by giddiness,
headache, dizziness and nausea. In extreme cases, unconsciousness and death
may occur. Kidney damage may be indicated by changes in urine output or
appearance, pain upon urination or in the lower back or general edema
(swelling from fluid retention). Liver damage may be indicated by loss of
appetite, jaundice (yellowish skin and eye color), fatigue and sometimes pain
and swelling in the upper right abdomen.

Aggravated Medical Conditions:
Pre-existing eye, skin, respiratory, liver and kidney disorders and may be
aggravated by exposure to this product.

For additional health information, refer to section 11.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inhalation:
Move victim to fresh air and provide oxygen if breathing is difficult. Get
medical attention.

Skin:
Flush exposed area with water and follow by washing with soap if available.
If redness, swelling, pain and/or blisters occur, transport to the nearest
medical facility for additional treatment.

Eye:
Flush eyes with plenty of water while holding eyelids open. Rest eyes for 30
minutes. If redness, burning, blurred vision or swelling occur, transport to
nearest medical facility for additional treatment.

Ingestion:
DO NOT take internally. Do NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs
spontaneously, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration of liquid into
lungs. Get medical attention.

Note to Physician:
Ethylene Glycol (EG) and Diethylene Glycol (DEG) intoxication may initially
produce behavioral changes, drowsiness, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, and
convulsions. EG and DEG are nephrotoxic. End stages of poisoning may include
renal damage or failure with acidosis. Supportive measures, supplemented with
hemodialysis if indicated, may limit the progression and severity of toxic
effects. For ETHYLENE GLYCOL POISONING, intravenous ethanol is a recognized
antidotal treatment; other antidotal treatments also exist for ethylene glycol
poisoning.

make sure the coolant you use is dexcool and you still have to do a 50/50 mix of dexcool and water.

and kaisoboy in response to your original post i haven't had to add any fluid to mine at all. been at the same level everytime i open my hood.
