get 16" steelies and snow tires from tirerack.com. The whole thing mounted, balanced, and shipped to your door is like $600.

Dude, go get your factory tires studded. It's not that expensive, and then you can splurge on some high performance summer tires next spring.

Seriously, look into it.

dont put winters on your 18s. they will get thrashed in our winter
16 inch steelies and cheap winter rubber will be less overall than just the 18 inch winter tires, and
this way you save your nice rims.

and while were at it, since when does calgary get "light snow" lmao

He has a TC. they won't clear the Brembos. I made that same mistake...

I'd say el cheapo wheels but make sure they're gonna clear the brakes...

dood i REALLY wanna stay away from spacers and if i did go that route i'd be doing 17inch wheels from the 2.4L Cobalt...............otherwise i have no choice but to get 18inch winters tires..........i'm leaning towards the studding idea but i'd want to get some cheep-o all seasons for that. I plan to ride out the stock rubber next summer(2009) and summer(2010) get awsome new tread.

Overall I REALLY want winter tires for the tread compound, otherwise I'm paying $1000 for brand new 18inch mich-x-ice tires.

P.S. light snow lol, ya, my goal is to have winter tread by December LATEST. I am lucky for the most part and dun have to drive anywhere till just past noon everyday and by then the roads are cleared and usually already dry or mostly dry, enough that some cheep-o all seasons studded would get ok traction.

Small price to pay for the sake of not wrapping your new car around a pole, or worse, another vehicle. I've spent the coin on every car I've owned for winter tires. To me, it's totally worth every penny.

i survived many winters just fine here in Calgary on reg all season tires, up till last year, i never owned winter tires or even drove a car with winter tires.............KNOW the limits of your car and drive accordingly........it's not that hard really, it sucks sometimes not getting traction right away but if you know wat your doing you'll get it. Having said that, i've also never driven a car with true summer performance rubber till last year either. I KNOW for a fact I cannot drive the stock tires in anything below 0C degrees and if I do i'm risking some very scary things that can/will happen.

I agree that if you know your car, you can survive without winter tires. I'm just saying having winter tires takes away a lot of typical hazards. Many times it has snowed big time here, and people in our parking lot are stuck left and right. After helping a few with some pushes, I jump in my car and drive away with ease. There have been countless time wheer i can say my winter tires prevented me from disaster, where all seasons would have sunk me.

i just put some hankook icebear w300's in the 205/50r17 on my 2.4, even with the ss/na i drove last year with the all seasons and hated not having the traction and the stability and after that never again, always winter tires in the winter. $720 later and that was a discounted price.

Bought all four of my Hankook Icebear tires from discount tire and i think i paid about 170 bucks per tire. They also gave me a discount for all four and free shipping is nice I live in wisconsin and heavy snow, my Cobalt ss/sc drives 110% better and drove better through 6-8" of snow better than the 4x4 trucks were or just as good. **** you not!

but 18" low pro winter tires... i think the whole problem is that there low pro and wide.. wide tires are not what you want when trying to get traction in the snow
