you must sand it down, a good start out sand grit is 600grit, then move to 800 grit for a final prep sand, spray ur etching primer on the metal u are painting (if its bare metal you MUST use a etching primer or it wont work) spray 2 coats of primer and with 1000grit then whipe it clean and paint it

no, a normal primer such as sandable primer will not work, what happens is it wont stick.
thats why you MUST use a self etching primer

^exactly. etch primer has acid in it and adheres itself to the metal.

not true at all. you must scuff anything you paint for it to stick. wether its a scotch brite, or a high grit sandpaper, you just have to scuff it. Bare metal you need an etching primer, painting over something thats already painted, you need regular primer. Painting over plastic you need adhesion promoter and plastic paint.

dont need 3 coats of primer and 5 of paint and clear, those numbers are based on what? you use as much as you need. usually the paint you use will tell you how much you need. when spray bombing, use enough paint to cover the surface and make it even, then clear with a coat or 2

Doing the valve cover with high heat paint? or like a base coat clear coat?
i did mine with base coat clear coat.
when i did min i used a wire wheel to clean the valve cover and used a primer, i was dumb and wanted it done and didnt use a self etching primer and now im regreting it.
you sand the cover, prime it with self etching primer with 2 coats, then sand the primer with 1000 grit (stay away from scotch brite pads) then paint your coats of paint, when doing base clear on small items like that i like to use 3 coats of base, and 5 coats clear.
when it comes to paint you cant really **** up, but with clear coat u lay alot down and you have a peice of dirt or something in it you can always wet sand it out...

now when painting with spray bomb i wouldnt bother with a primer sense high heat paint normally says on the can you dont need to ise a primer, just requires a really good clean surface so just sand the surface with 600 grit then 800 grit and sprat the paint.

ther plastic part covering the plugs.. just sand that with 600 grit then 800 grit and lay the paint to her. and u be good.

did yo use painters tape?
theres 3 different kinds of painter tape that i know of.
1. Blue - most stickiest tape
2. dark green - in the medium range of stickyness
3. light green this is what you would use when taping of fresh paint.

when i did this valve cover i painted it blue then taped off the blue to make the rising sun with light green tape.
and then used the dark green tape to hold everything tightly

when i did this valve cover i painted it silver then painted the silver of to make the rising sun using the dark green tape and it pealed the paint.

But overall when it comes down to paint pealing alot of the time its because of not good enough sand job was done.

lol thanks, did them for 2 of my buddies, they wanted the honda vtec shaved off them so people didnt know they had a d series with v tec... even though the sohc is the most worse one out there lol

i been practicing my air brush skills, and what not, i hope to do my valve cover so that it looks as if its see thru and you can see the cams chilling inside the head.

if i cant figure this out then i dunno what im doing with my valve cover.
