If i were you i would invest into a gasket for when your done slap a new gasket on there.
you know everytime you take pressure off a gasket your not suppose to reuse them right?

actually you can reuse them, they are made of an MLS material that is reusuable. the valve cover just has to be torqued to OEM specs and in a certain pattern. and the oil leaking on the side of the head is an LSJ thing. mine has done it since the day i got it. its just such a small amount that it doesnt matter

So i took a couple peoples advice and went out and bouht a buffer. Used the applicator and put on more polish then took off the black crap that comes from the inside. Then buffed it up, looks even better. I'll see if i can take 1 or 2 pics before i head back to the base today

do it till its tight, or actually grab the torque wrench and do it that way. just don't make it so that the gasket is being pushed down in. its gotta be all even thats what it really comes down to or esle thats when it leaks.

If you get the proper bricks of compounds and sewn cotton buffing wheels, you can cut out a lot of elbow grease and get a brighter finish. I used to refinish metal for a living a few years back... I never wet sanded anything higher than 600grit. For the tight places a regular 8" or 10" wheel won't fit in, you can use felt bobs on a dremel tool. If I get energetic enough and my Nova build doesn't take all my time this spring, I was planning to do my SC, valve cover, and wheels....

even starting with 200 isn't bad & I recommend that you use a 3 inch sanding block on the flat surface comes out much better!

Believe me you can Polish it up way better than chrome plate & it don't pit!

^^^NO difference in that to this but this can always be buffed right back to new condition basicly forever, Chrome plating will only last so long...but to each their own!

A properly polished cover should look like this!

Thanks Guys, been using a polished cover for over 2 years now...If you are looking to polish just check out the How -to Polishing 101. It's all in the sanding ...then the last 2 steps sewn cloth wheel with Tipoli, a loose cloth wheel with white rouge & then a clean loose cloth wheel & some liguid Metal Polish!
