Fast LS Cobalt

This car just became the fastest, quickest sport compact in STL, and no it is not mine. First time at the track for the car from what I understand.
"Jason Hunt, driving Charlie Schafer's brand-new Cobalt, ran 9.93/150.21 and 9.87/150.97 on its first two passes last night at Gateway.

The car, built by Dave Zientara Racecraft in St. Charles, still has the dealership window stickers intact ($14,450 for an '06 Cobalt LS Coupe) and has temporary plates. It uses a T6-boosted 2.2 making it STL's quickest and fastest FWD 4-cylinder by a few miles, too."

More info here. The car wasn't built for Pro FWD, it was built for Pro 4-Cylinder, a class NOPI just started running a few years ago. Here are the rules:

Quote:
Sport Compact FWD/RWD cars only. Unibody chassis, lexan windows, 1 piece front allowed, Gasoline only, 26” tire max, 2 power adders allowed, 74mm turbo limit, no automatics or aftermarket transmissions allowed.

The records for the class, set just last week in Phoenix, are 10.04/148.04.

Whoever said the interior is gutted must've been wearing sunglasses. It has a full interior (minus the passenger seat) including stock dash, door panels, and back seat, (althought they took the bottom of the back seat out for the second pass). It does have carpet, complete with holes for the bars.

Jason Hunt does have a license and the car had every piece of required safety equipment except for a 'chute. (I don't think Zientara expected 150 mph right off the bat!). They did find out they needed a slightly bigger catch can, though.

beat that LSJ's!!!

thats pretty cool actually, so they bought this car, shipped it to a shop and immediately began tearing it apart. Thats pretty damn sweet... Looks absolutely stock from the exterior too minus the wheels.

Although I'm not quite understanding one rule you posted y2kzman...
no automatics or aftermarket transmissions allowed
in the pic you posted that appears to be an auto drag tranny to me...

I just copy and pasted from another board where they are debating if an automatic is legal in the Nopi class that this car will be racing. I should have edited that out.

krzykrl. Ya that site is just a bunch of immature people for the most part, although I do have some friends there that are good guys. I live in SO CO not on hwy 70 to much.

I am the lucky person that gets to drive this car. The motor is from Roush, tranny is from Hydromatic. All of the parts are available in the GM Ecotec Handbook. The turbo system was designed by full-race in Arizona with input from Jason Hunt. Jason did all of the wiring and electrical work on the car as well as taking the first few test passes in the car. All of the fab work was done by Dave Zientara did all of the fab/cage work on the car. Charlie Schafer owns the cars and is the one making all of this happen. The car needs to be seen in person to be appreciated. Hope to meet some of you at some NOPI races this year. Feel free to ask any questions and I will answer as best I can.
