Broke 5th, Options?

I haven't been keeping up with the transmission game much lately focused on other projects. Today driving home on the interstate I managed to break 5th gear (which seems like an odd break) 1-4 work fine but of course the trans is noisy.

What options do I have, I know the f40 is out there but I am not excited about putting 4k into a car that's only worth 8k. I know people use to sell the 4.45 final drive to correct the 3rd problem, if thats still around I might do that while replacing the 5th gear. Is there anywhere that sells just the cryo treated gears or a rebuild kit?

4.45 gears are hard to find ...your option are

Lsj tranny 4.05 drop in
Another LNf tranny
F40
Hope to find 4.45 gears( they can be found in some older saturns, I forget which one)
F23 not some much a drop in

Thanks for the quick replies, so does anyone sell them, or do I need to go junk yard hunting and pull and pray for one myself?

Thanks,

Any place to buy replacement or cryo treated gears? I think I am going to tear the trans apart and see what the damage is, might be cheaper to replace broke parts than buy and ship a new one ($2100 at powell)

Update:

PM's and E-mails sent to Powell and FMSR, I got the trans tore apart, possibly I will attache a pic here, and it turns out I can't find individual replacement parts anywhere, gm list 5th gear as "un-servicable"

no idea really I was on the interstate just normal driving and all of the sudden I heard a small pop and looked down and it was coming off of red line. I had been driving for a little over an hr in 5th so idk if there was some kind of oiling or cooling problem?

lol I dont know what it is with 5th gear both saab and cobalt are breaking them suddenly. Must be the polar vortex. dual spoolin' you emailed me right?

I wonder looking if the peened nut broke a tab off and dropped into the mesh ? The saab one I know of was rebuilt, but asted 150 miles. its hard to get the fifth gears on sometimes and if you hammer on them they get cracked.
gonzo later

and 10 -4 5th gear is not serviced. its retarded. new second gears are 700 bux. etc. its a hard life.

John,

Yes, I emailed you, I assumed the nut damage was due to the gear break not the other way around, I will have the old trans in hand this weekend and can take a better look at it, or send you the box and let you take a look at it.

I took speedbuggys trans apart day before yesterday, wrong oil in it, Speedbuggy is p/o'd at the dealer coz thats who put the wrong fluid in.

Took a core apart yesterday, I forget where it came from but it was one that had been rebuilt. The folks who did that used an old collapsible spacer instead of a new one. That was the end of the entire gear set. ugh.

So since the 4.45 gears are so hard to find, what else can handle the ZFR? LSJ tranny with 4.05 drop in? Looking for something that will be reliable. Thanks!
