Clutch Issue

Got a question.

Does anyone with a 2007 2.0L supercharged have clutch slippage letting off the clutch fast into 2nd gear???

It take about maybe 3 seconds for the clutch to grab once I let off the clutch pedal fast which is noticable. It has 50 000 kms on it and only install is stage II

yup like a weak pressure plate issue?

make sure your TOTALLY off the clutch before hitting the gas. if it only does it between shifts, most likely driver error. if it's slipping in the middle of gears as well, then you have a bad clutch.

i dont think its driver error i've heard multiple stories of people slamming it into 2nd leting off the clutch and stopping the gas and the pressure plate simply just doesnt engage after a few seconds

i'm sure there's some weak pressure plates out there. but why only on the 1-2 if it's a weak pressure plate? why not on the other shifts as well?

there's a few reasons why it would slip on the 1-2 shift though having to deal with driver error. anamolous did a great write up about why a clutch will slip going into 2nd if you're spinning the wheels through first, so I won't get into that. another reason is that the rpms drop so much between 1st and 2nd, it's easy to get on the gas before the clutch is fully engaged. add into that the fact that majority of cobalt owners are young, and don't have much manual driving experience, and it's easy to start slipping the clutch on shifts. the fact that it doesn't do it on any other shifts would lead me to believe it has something to do with the way he's shifting from 1-2

Yes its possible that its driver error but i'll give him the benifit of the doubt, as for why it only does it from 1-2 i dunno i've actually had it from 2-3 before, this has also happened to others like Area47 and Get On It

Ya so this occurs only when I am all over it. Just to clear that up.

But I like this write up^^^^^ even though I'm not as young as I used to be I wouldn't
clam to be the perfect manual driver although i try.

""it's easy to get on the gas before the clutch is fully engaged."" this is true.

I believe you are right when you say it's the way i am shifting from 1-2. From what you and others are saying I need to have more time before i hit the gas in order to let the clutch engage properly. I believe I see why this is happening,,, thank you I'll try it out. Just sucks we are getting dumped on now. Had a warm spell for a bit.

Mine does it from 2-3 occasionally, but not often. I'm not saying i'm the best manual driver out there, but i know it's partly due to i didn't let the clutch out quick enough and that i hit the gas too soon. I've had it happen from 1-2 before, but only after the clutch was prolly hot from city driving all day and then i went to hop on the freeway at a stop light. Gave it all she had, went to shift, and it seemed like second wasn't even there. i had to let off the gas and throw in in neutral and put it back in gear. Haven't had the problem since that one time tho. I would say faster left foot, slower right foot lol

Ya I agree with ya their. I see my fault now. I've done it about 3 times but that is 3 too many for me and it freeks me out.

My other worry was it was common enough for cobalt to slip from 1-2nd but no it's just driver error. I'll put it as that until I do the fast off of clutch slower on gas theory out. Have to wait till the snow passes again.

I can't say it enough this site is AWSOME!!!

yea, so that's most likely what it is. clutch has to be TOTALLY out before you can hit the gas. cobalt is a hard car to get used to. the 1-2 shift is especially hard. any other gears you can go all out, you have to have a lil finesse in the 1-2 shift to nail it. you can still slam the shift and go fast, just have to make sure the clutch is out first. with some practice and now that you understand why it's happening it will get easier.

also, big props for admitting that it's the driving. too many people think they drive perfectly and will never admit it's the driving. those people don't get any better. more importantly than nailing a shift perfectly everytime is knowing why it's perfect, or why it's not. i don't care who you are, everyone will periodically miss a shift, or slip their clutch too much, nobody is perfect. but if you understand what went wrong on a bad shift, it's a big help. if you have any more specific questions feel free to post up, or shoot me a pm.

Even though I have warranty I just don't want to go in for something that I can prevent and i believe a clutch is under one of those wearing components that warranty doesn't cover. I ask on here now first, before I go to the stealership. Here u you can get many perspectives saves me time that's for sure. Thank you again.

It is "common" in a sense, as most people don't treat the clutch right in these cars, and the stock clutch does not react well when it gets hot, it gets slippery. During hard driving, the 1-2 shift can easily result in slippage of the clutch if it is not taken care of or if it gets hot. I wouldn't say it is normal, since you shouldn't have clutch slip at all, but it is a regular thing on these cars.

Driver practice can counter it, even go as far as recovering the clutch to where it won't slip during that type of driving. I've done it on my car, and seen others do it. You have to learn to be a little more abrupt with your clutch engagements during daily driving, less slipping, better rev-matching, and the clutch will hold a lot of power. It is not just the pressure plate, the factory friction material doesn't like to get hot and it glazes easily.

so ur saying we should not power shift on the 1-2?? cuz I am having the same problem he is having, I even bought a new clutch but hadn't the time to have it installed. when I'm racing I always power shift that b****...actually it still might be my clutch because when it starts to slip, unless I ease off the gas it would never grip up I sometimes get it on the 2-3 as well.. but again that's power shifting..

these clutches do not like that. your heating it up and glazing it real bad

DO NOT POWERSHIFT THE STOCK CLUTCH. IT DOESN'T WORK WELL WHEN IT GETS HOT.

I don't know how to get the message through to these people. I put almost 400whp through a stock clutch with no slip. Shift quickly but with control, and drive the car correctly on a daily basis. My car broke the tires loose on the 1-2 shift even with a regular shift. Any harder than that was a waste of energy.

Any clutch slip is bad. Change the way you drive or get a clutch that can deal with the abuse. It won't get better on its own.

thanks for the info, can u give me a 2 sentence lesson how exactly I should shift it? also I bought the exedy oem clutch, is that a good one? I'll install it and try to treat it right, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Shifting has to be done with minimal clutch slip. When you daily drive the car, don't force the clutch to speed up or slow down the engine when changing gears. Be very quick with your on/off clutch pedal movements, and if you have the rpms right, you can do it smoothly. If the car bucks when you step of the clutch quickly, you aren't matching the revs closely enough.

Exedy OEM is just that, a stock replacement. It will hold up better than the stocker for sure, but it is not the same as a stage 2 or so clutch. If you are going to do the work, i'd say at least get a spec 2+ or an Exedy Stg 3.

exactly. i've been trying to tell people this for so long. to sum it up, you should NOT be using the clutch to make your shifts smoother.

i shift below 3k in normal driving, probably even closer to 2500. but when i get on it, will grab hard on the shifts and i can roast the tires on the shift to 2nd, all the way through to 3rd with no slip, then get into 3rd and keep on going.

got it.... hey another thing I noticed.. when I'm driving the car in traffic and I'm in 1st gear the car jerks between 1 and 3000 rpm.. does this mean the clutch is slipping then grabbing then slipping and grabbing ? it's almost as if I'm jerking the car by tapping the gas, I'm sure thats what the car behind me thinks.

first gear requires a VERY steady foot to not jerk in traffic. i would only stay in first if you're going like less than 10 mph though. otherwise shift to 2nd.
